But I want the boys to look CUTE

Dear ESB,

How do you get 6 groomsmen in three different countries and various tastes and body types and to wear the same (or similar) medium grey, cute (read: NOT something a business man would wear) suit?

*****

YOU DON'T

*****

Also, our wedding is in mid-February.

Gulp.

Thanks-

I don't know how to shop for boy clothes, let alone clothes for SIX boys.

*****

blah blah blah

yeah, no.

just let em wear whatever they've got. wtf.

  2. GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAN. I am so so so sosososososo sick of GROWN MEN rocking the "petit ecolier" look -- peg-leg pants, little tiny blazers, skinny ties, and the like. MEN should look like MEN, not boys, and that doesn't necessarily mean a 'corporate'. My husband happens to be a Big Mean Businessman, AND the absolute BEST DRESSED human being I've seen (aside from the Magical Unicorns featured on the Satorialist).

I guess the writer didn't exactly imply that she wanted advice on this ubiquitous look, but the fact that she referred to the groomsmen as 'boys' irked me.

Check out this website : Mr. Porter

    grumpity grump grump grump. grumble.

  3. I'd agree with this, if the bridesmaids are also let off the hook. But if you're gonna ask the women to dress alike, why do the guys get special dispensation? Because they are men and must be honored? Or because they are boys and must be clucked clucked at because they are boys? Nah. My guess is you meant that the women shouldn't have to wear the same thing either. Right? Unless they want to.

  4. I had two in kilts, one in a full ceremonial Indian suit, one in traditional tails and my little brother wore bright purple trousers. My bridesmaids picked any dress they wanted and nobody wore the same colour. And they all looked bloody awesome together.

I just don't get matchy matchy.

  5. Since they live in different countries and they presumably can't shop at the same store (except maybe at Zara, which is international for the most part) and you want them to match, then you will probably have to ask them all for their size/measurements and then go get them their suits at your choice of store. Ask them to pay you back at the wedding, unless you're buying the suits for them as a thank-you for traveling to the wedding and standing up for you. Personally, I would try to keep the cost of their clothing down for them since it sounds like they're already coming from far away to be there for you guys.

We had charcoal wool vests made for our groomsmen in their sizes because I found wool on sale, and because a woman in our town only charged me $25 per vest, so it was a much more affordable option for our groomsmen than asking them to buy vests at J Crew or something. The vests fit them each perfectly and all of them wear them to death to this day. If you're not married to the idea of them all being in suits, maybe something like this is an option for you?

  7. With only a month to go, i don't think you have a choice other than to let go of the dream, give them some guidleines, and hope for the best. Maybe purchase them all matching ties so at least something will be in line? With your wedding only a month away my advice is to focus your attention on the things that you have more control over and stop obsessing over the impossible!

  8. I second ESB.

Soon after we began planning our wedding we realized we were not interested in micro managing what are grown friends will wear as they stand by us at the altar. We trust they want to look fab an dwill do what it takes.

Our groomsmen are all in different kilts (we live in LA but the FH is from Scotland--his GM are mostly from England but they all *wanted* to rock the kilt). I told my girls to wear whatever made them feel pretty and could afford. Done!

  9. Oops, hate bad grammar--"our grown" and "and will"

  10. Suits are expensive and require special tailoring to look great. All grown men of a certain level of income (in North America and Western Europe) should be expected to own at least one black or gray suit. Tell them to wear this. If they are not from these areas or incomes, work with them to find something you are comfortable in.

The reality is, you can get bridesmaids to wear matching dresses for cheap and look good (not that I'm endorsing matching outfits). But you cannot get men all in the same good suit for less that, what? $700+?

Also, you cannot rent good gray suits. Fact, I was in a wedding where it was attempted.

  11. First of all, men don't want to look cute. Ever.

If you want them to wear the same thing, they should rent a tux or suit. Hillary is right: suits are pricey and need to be tailored, so you're better off having them wear one that's already in their closet. It's a tall order (too tall, IMO) to ask these guys to buy a suit just for your wedding.

  12. Dear 17 Beats: I love you.

I <3 Mr Porter too so much. But not as much as you right now.

Tiger of Sweden has some pretty good deals if any of your groomsmen are in various countries of Europe.

  13. But that's is want them to buy a suit, that is. God damn it, stupid keyboard shortcuts posted my comment before I finished. Anyway. Yeah, either have them rent, or wear something they own, or be ready to fork out a shit load of money for new suits. I'd be pressed if you made me pay for a new suit, js. It's like the brides who tell their bridesmaids "BUY LOUBITINS. YOU HAVE TO. IDC IF I SPELLED THAT WRONG OR NOT. BUY THEM"

  14. Renting suits or tuxes is a huge rip off. Either tell them to wear something grey and buy them matching ties or go H&M, those things are everywhere and they have cheap good looking pants/slim fitting dress shirts for men.

  15. Can we all stop with the fucking matching already? It looks dumb. Thx.

Also, with one month you cannot ask them to buy a new suit. Or you can,but it wont happen. Also, grown up males are men, not boys. Your ring bearer is a boy.

  16. Benetton is everywhere and has cute cheap suits too. But really, if you just tell them the color and style idea, they can get it done themselves. (They can text you pictures for your approval if you want to be manage-y.) Buy them all the same tie or vest. Literally no one is going to notice if one guy has a different gray suit that the next, there is just too much other stuff happening visually in a wedding party.

  17. If the people in your wedding are incapable of dressing themselves I suggest you find replacements. If you want your wedding party to wear a particular get-up you should foot the bill.

  19. Also: Cute suit? Really?

  20. A cute suit would be, like, a bear suit. Or a panda suit. Rent them matching panda costumes.

  21. You guys are sanctimonious assholes. Especially ESB - good god, get a fucking grip. Oh yeah - you're boring.

  22. Whoaw anon 11:03, take a breath and calm down. You are coming across really childish. One can only assume you are a writer-in scorned, or someone who secretly regrets some outfit choices at your wedding? Hey ho.

P.s. why are you here if you think it's boring? Hmm...
