Okay, Smartypantses: What does one wear over THIS dress?

Hi ESB,

I'm struggling to find something to keep me warm with my dress. I'm getting married in LA (Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House to be exact) early February 2013. I'm planning to wear this Nicole Miller dress. As you can see, half the fun is showing off the back.

That said, it's possible the weather could be finicky in early February. Though we'll be indoors for the most part, it would be great to find something I could throw on if it gets cold. Any ideas for great cardigans? I'm open to non-white (pink, gold...splash of color!) if it goes well with the dress. I'd love to stay under $300 too. Is this an impossible request?

If you have any great finds, I'd love to hear it! I'm a bit stumped.

Thanks!

speaking of lady tuxedos....

There are some terrif options on ebay. Such as this Katayone Adeli jacket, currently $125 with 3 days left to bid.

[Warning: Be sure to read the fine print. Don't be fooled by a "Balmain" jacket that was made in Korea....]

lady tuxedo?

Hi there, ESB,

I am traveling to New Orleans for a funky NYE wedding at this lovely industrial space full of decadence and decay, and I got it in my head that it might be fun to wear a lady tuxedo.

I've seen one only in pictures: a cigarette pant with a cropped jacket that somehow manages to contain more than a few ounces of femininity. Tell me, 1. Does such a thing exist outside of Vogue?, and 2. Am I insane to pursue this nonsense?

Thank you, thank you!

*****

Clearly you were not around for #PANTSWEEK. I am very pro lady tuxedo. Very.

Rag & Bone is making my favorite tux jackets for ladies right now.

(Pale pink, $535 at American Rag)

(Metallic brocade, $895 at Shopbop)

(Metallic shawl-collar, $595 at Neiman Marcus)

But you can find em a lot cheaper at Zara or even Banana Republic.

I'm trying out this whole RStyle thing, which means if you click through and buy something I get a commission... and I feel very ambivalent about it... but hey, I just spend two hours shopping this shit so I might as well get paid, right? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAaaaaaaaaa.

leopard leopard leopard leopard

Will someone please wear a leopard coat with her wedding dress?

This linen version from Emerson Fry seems like the right weight for early fall....

I found your wedding cardi

Also: If you click over to Zara's main page, the partially-Patti-inspired lookbook/short is pretty excellent. (Even if Patti would never wear pumps with bows.)

Silver. Moto. Jacket.

Someone clearly needs to wear this over her wedding dress.

Bonus: It's vegan!

I FOUND YOUR WEDDING JACKET

Actually, prettyglorious found it, and I stole it right out of her Polyvore set.

I am overwhelmed at the prospect of sorting through all of your Colorado wedding ensembles and narrowing it down to just five for the vote. But. Shopbop asked me to extend the deadline...

You've got til 12pm pst on Thursday to keep shopping.

There's been a request for GROOM STYLE

According to my man Samuel Fehrenbach, this Ami Wool Tuxedo Jacket is all you need.

Oh, and maybe this little bit of advice from Tom Ford...

Yet another reader is forced to make HER OWN STYLE CHOICES

Aug 10

Dear ESB,

I would greatly appreciate your stylish opinion on my wedding ensemble.

So far I have everything I need but have recently been rethinking what I'm wearing. I am a somewhat traditional bride but am about doing what I want despite tradition and yet have ended up making some very typical choices. This is what I get for going shopping with my dear sweet mother instead of my FSIL who has kick ass style.

Here is what I have so far that I'm happy with:

This Romona Keveza dress but with a sash I'm making that's more casual. These Seychelles flats. This rad sparkly bangle.

Here's what I have so far that I'm rethinking:

This necklace, which now seems waaay too sweet. And a sweater similar to this with no polka dots.

Before I got my engagement ring I never wore any jewelry, so I could really use some help finding a necklace that's more unique (preferably in a white or coral or peach). Our wedding is an evening garden wedding in 1 month and we are doing about 1/2 traditional things and 1/2 whatever we want.

Also, I'm thinking of switching the sweater for this because I'm a blazer girl at heart. Any of your superb input is highly appreciated!

Sincerely
Sucked Into Sweetness

Also, I'm wearing this in my hair. And I completely understand if you don't respond to this simply because I have sent you 3 emails instead of 1

No worries, you're clearly very busy. It was great!

Although I probably could have gone with no necklace, I ended up buying that blazer and LOVED it.

Pictures attached and credit to our awesome photographer. And yes, there's a link to some incredible underwater engagement photos at the bottom of that link - that's why you take engagement photos.

You're awesome,
Hallie

Clearly you did not need my help one bit.

pie AND ice cream

well we had had key lime pie, red velvet whoopie pies AND ice cream. I was too blissed out the day of to notice the ridiculous tank top the ice cream boy had on that day. Interesting wardrobe choice.

Also I am the girl who bought the Emerson Made white tux jacket to wear over my dress. It ended up being so nice out it was not at all necessary. Did I suspect this would be the case (June in Brooklyn) and just wanted a good excuse to buy it? Possibly.

Fine. Fuck the veil.

Dear ESB,

Fine. Okay. I sent a super long "I have the dress now please make all of my other decisions for me" type email (with a million attachments), which, in hindsight, may have been ill-advised.

I do actually have my own opinions... I think I'm just kind of sick of all of the choices to be made and frankly just want to get back to my career and get on with our marriage.... and I just want someone else to figure it all out for me. I imagine you get a lot of that.

I can deal with the flats. This is not rocket science.

I can deal with the veil. I should have known you couldn't care less. Except for wearing my mom's lace, I couldn't care less either.

I think I can even deal with the jewelry situation. Etsy. Done.

All I want to know, is what to wear over my shoulders that is not fur, but is kind of 1940's glam meets rock and roll. Or not. Just awesome. Can I ask for that?

I just want awesome. Awesome under $200.

My dress is a very simple Nicole Miller. I want to take it up a notch for the reception.

That is all.

*****

Call me crazy, but I think this florette bomber (ON SALE for $99 at the Quail Shop) would be pretty awesome with your dress.

I'm feeling the grey with your antique white satin, but the photo of the red jacket is so good I had to post it, too.

I SEE PANTS, PEOPLE.

Ever since #pantsweek ended, I see pants everywhere.

And jackets. So. many. good. jackets.

For the record, I am now fully on board with the shirtless/braless-under-the-jacket action. If your boobs are small enough, I say ROCK IT.

Seeking: A Vegan Jacket for a Winter Bride

Hey girl hey,

I have some time, but I need your fashion help! I'm getting married in January in Dallas. The weather could be 60 degrees or 20 degrees, who knows. I need a jacket that I can wear that will sustain my body heat whatever temp it may be outside. (I'm not getting married outside, just taking some pics and walking to and from the car, so this doesn't need to be anything too intense). Here's my dress.

My colors are sapphire (to match my engagement ring, duh) and gold, so I was thinking maybe a gold or sapphire sequin jacket? Or is that too much with the sparkly (for lack of a better term...please help me find a better term) for the top of the dress? Maybe a rich velvet? Am I getting into tacky territory?

Oh, and I'm vegan, so no wool or silk por favor...and fur goes without saying.

*****

Much as I love sparkle, I must firmly steer you away from SPARKLE-ON-SPARKLE.

I want to say get a big beautiful gauzy scarf.

This 100% linen Giada Forte scarf is currently half off at Otte.

Or check in on Scout & Catalogue in the fall.

Her soft pink cotton gauze scarf isn't quite the right color, but it's definitely the right idea.

AM I CRAZY? Can this girl wear a linen/cotton wrap with a silk satin wedding dress?
