If you like Miranda July….

You'll love Sheila Heti.

I hoarded this book. Though it's a quick read, I eked it out slowly, renewing it from the Los Angeles Public Library* twice because I didn't want it to end.

Raw and honest and dirty and funny, it's billed as "a novel from life" but it doesn't feel like any novel I've ever read. Feels like its very own thing.

(I'm pretty sure it was Meghan who turned me on to S.H., though I can't find the link on her blog.)

*Shout out to the LAPL. Did you know you can request a book from anywhere in the system and they'll deliver it to your branch for you? I'm harboring a small fear of bedbugs (which have apparently begun traveling via library book, and have been found in Los Angeles -- who knew?) so I try to stick my books in the freezer for a week or two before I read them. It was definitely firstmilk who turned me on to this idea.

It Chooses You

A book review from one of my favorite readers:*

Hello fellow Miranda July lover/person I've never met,

I just read her book It Chooses You, a book she wrote about finishing the script for The Future. It was incredibly sad, inspiring, and comforting. I highly recommend it.

I found it to be a great meditation on process and discipline and distraction and muse-chasing.

I bought it at Skylight at 2pm and just finished it now. And I went to the spa and the grocery store with my husband somewhere in the middle, so it's not much of a commitment.

Also, I cried.

*Who am I kidding? You are all my favorite readers.

Miranda July's The Future

Last Thursday, H and I went to a preview screening of Miranda July's new movie.

We giggled our pants off.

And then we learned in the Q&A afterward that it was supposed to be very sad.

Most of the people there found it sad.

Is there something wrong with us?

Please go see The Future and report back.

p.s. I wore my white jeans and my granny sandals, sure that Miranda would wear granny sandals too and we would meet on a higher plane of granny-sandal-dom and be best friends for ever and ever. She wore platform clogs.

Miranda July, you kick ass

Your book is so funny. And sad. At the same time.

With your permission, I will put it on my shelf next to others by

Sam Lipsyte
Anton Chekhov
and
DFW

Or I might just group all my yellow books together. That would be satisfying too.

p.s. I also loved your movie. Am I just making you stuck up telling you all this?
