Seeking: Sturdy but sexy heels

Howdy,

I'm getting married outside and have to navigate some pretty treacherous terrain. To avoid a bambi, legs akimbo situation, do you have any suggestions for fabulous, but sturdy heels? Is that even a thing? My dress [pictured above] isn't very forgiving in terms of footwear choices, being shorter, so I want to go all out.

Also, flats are not an option. This is one of the few chances I have to dress girly/appropriately sexy and I want to take full advantage!!

on not being a mother

Kristina wrote something the other day that I can't stop thinking about.

Her post was mostly about how connected she feels to other mothers and mothers-to-be, but the bit that jumped out at me was this: "in some way it becomes almost harder to relate to people who aren't yet mothers." 

Aren't yet mothers.

I don't plan on becoming a mother. My best lady in New York is a mom -- she's expecting her second baby at the end of July. My best lady in Vancouver is doing her damndest to get pregnant. And my best lady in Glasgow has such a great outlook on impending motherhood she almost makes me want to have twins too. Almost.

Like I said, I don't plan on becoming a mother. It's something H and I keep talking about, and we're pretty much convinced that parenthood isn't something we want to sign up for. But the idea that this decision will pull me and my friends apart makes me sad.

Just because I don't want kids doesn't mean I can't get way into shopping for kids' clothes. I scored some fantastic Carhartt overalls at the Brooklyn Flea for Mr. S, size three-year-old.

Yoko Ono has never been a style icon of mine, but you've gotta give her props for doing her own thing.

vintage tennis shoes

Gerry Beckley has an insane vintage tennis shoe collection. (Read more on 2 or 3 things I know.)

He even rocked them on the cover of America's first album.

I'm particularly taken with the white Supergas. Now I kind of desperately want a pair.

I always want the thing that's hard to find. You know, the thing no one else has.

This may relate to why I'm so easily bored by wedding trends. Like cupcakes. And converse. Enough already with the matching converse. I'm more interested in individual style.

I inspired cevd to buy these bensimon hightops. And she wears them so well. I'm gonna cop that fold-y down style with mine.

(I swear they are not paying me. I just really like the shoes.)

an open letter to Bensimon

To the lovely, stylish people of Bensimon,

I effing love your shoes.

And I don't know if you've noticed, but a google search of "bensimon sneakers" brings up this east side bride post as the second hit. The Bensimon Girls don't even make it onto the first page.

So I think you should hire me to be your spokesperson. And/or send me free product for review.

Speaking of dressing like a French woman....

Check out my French men's sneakers. Xmas gift for the spoiled wombat from her infinitely patient husband.

On December 26, we trecked all over the east village. I dug a pair of YMC sneakers at Odin, a men's store with a modern/hipster/goth aesthetic, but they don't carry any sizes below 8.

H-town called around, which led us to Tani on the upper west side. And once I spotted the Bensimon high tops, I had eyes for no one else.

Thank you, French men, for having small feet. And impeccable taste. I am done with Converse for good.
