Miranda July's The Future

Last Thursday, H and I went to a preview screening of Miranda July's new movie.

We giggled our pants off.

And then we learned in the Q&A afterward that it was supposed to be very sad.

Most of the people there found it sad.

Is there something wrong with us?

Please go see The Future and report back.

p.s. I wore my white jeans and my granny sandals, sure that Miranda would wear granny sandals too and we would meet on a higher plane of granny-sandal-dom and be best friends for ever and ever. She wore platform clogs.

  1. oh you lucky. Miranda July is seriously one of my favorite people. 'You, Me, & Everyone We Know' used to be my litmus test for dudes. It's been hard for me to imagine that 'The Future' could be as good, but only because I loved the former so very much. I'm glad to hear that you liked it, and also that you saw Miranda July, eeek!

    1. Okay I saw it. I thought it was super sad. Their were funny bits and with the right person in the right mood I could see giggling my pants off, but for me it was a pretty big downer

I did like it - I'm not sure I liked it as much. But I did think it was very good. I'm amazed that Miranda July pulls this stuff off. She does it so well too and it always feels sincere. There are so many of these modern romance/tragedies that try so hard to be quirky that it's painful. Wes Anderson's movies have become a bit like that to me. Like Wes Anderson- I feel like Miranda July has a 'thing' that she does, but damn she does it so much better and with more integrity*. In my opinion.

*At least post Royal Tenenbaums Wes Anderson

  3. The preview was funny. I think sometimes the funny/sad line is a little indistinct. Come on 'Paw paw'? Funny.

Looks like that hip kind of quirky melancholy... I'm totally gonna see it now.

  4. I saw it/her too-- in Minneapolis. I giggled as well and might have snorted, too. I was aware that it was sad, but that just made me laugh more. Humans- especially at their most pathetic- are really funny. That opening scene on the couch? Awesome.

  5. you KNOW i can't go see a movie right now. that preview looked incredibly sad to me, but movies about the human condition always make me sad. i will see it when i can rent it.

did you ever see black swan? did we discuss it and i've already forgotten? if so, i'm sorry.

  7. oh lucky you that you got to see it! the hubs and I laughed too, watching the trailer. I just finished reading, her short stories, "No one belongs here more than you" I lurve her. She's quirky fun, makes me feel better at some the silly stuff I think about and do.

  8. Yeah, laughing in movies when you shouldn't is a bitch. My hubby and I went to see the original English version of Death at a Funeral back when it was out. A funny movie in general. But there was a scene near the end that was very sombre and sad. And we got the giggles. Totally uncontrollable giggles. Like you used to get in school assembly. Terrible. But terribly funny at the same time.

  10. For me, it was one of those films that make it fun to be sad... There were lots of funny moments, but I walked out with a dark mood. It brought up my own fears of creative paralysis, and losing myself to distractions that build up over the years. And yet, so many lovely details, like that Beach House song, make me want to watch it again.

  13. I did that at the end of Stepford Wives, the remix. Giggled my pants of and everyone glared.

  14. I heard just the beginning clip of the trailer on the radio and couldn't imagine how I was supposed to take it seriously. After seeing the trailer now, I (1) really want to see it, and (2) will probably laugh at inappropriate times, too.

  15. and the report, two weeks later!

hamish linklater: considerably more affecting in the moon sequence than i'd have suspected after years of seeing him at "shakespeare in the park" (he usually plays clowns).

the little girl who says she'll pee like a soldier: kind of devastating.

paw paw: deeply questionable as a frame, but not traumatic to cat people. also pleasantly surprised!

    veterinary science: plausible.
