Last Night's Makeup?

I always wish I had the nerve to do this, but I'm sort of anal about washing my face before bed.

  1. What products do you use?

  2. Yeah, um, I totally do that. But only because I'm super lazy. But I wash it off in the morning, so that counts, right??

  3. Leaving my makeup on is a sure fire way to get a big fat zit on my face. Like, even if I happen to be working until 4 am and don't even technically sleep in it.

    2. Heeeeere's the thing. I have (had) the worst skin ever. EVEREVER! It has plagued me all my life (well, since I was 13) until recently.

I read that French women (they're so annoyingly awesome all the time, it's really unfair) rarely wash their faces. When they shower, they try their best to not get their face wet. They wash it once or twice a week, in order to exfoliate. I thought, "Oh man, my skin would be a train wreck if I didn't wash it twice a day!" But it was a train wreck anyway!

And then I went on a week-long camping trip and we were in the back-country with no way to wash ourselves and when I got home and looked in the bathroom mirror for the first time, I was astonished to see that my face was clear of its usual blemishes. WHAT? I was the dirtiest I think I have ever been...but my face was clear. So from then on I have washed my face as few times a week as possible, and my skin has stayed clear. For the first time in many years, I don't break out. And if I do, the pimple(s) fades in a couple days...sometimes without ever even breaking through to the surface, provided I leave it alone and don't aggravate it.

When I do wash, I use my favorite scrub: Now Solutions Vitamin C & Oryza Sativa. I sleep with makeup on (which used to drive my skin nuts) all the time and nothing happens. I use all-natural makeup (Josie Maran) for the most part, because I don't like chemicals sitting on my skin for days.

Loooong story short, my skin is so much calmer and happier ever since I stopped scrubbing it twice a day.

  4. I often end up sleeping in my eye makeup because I'm too darn tired to wash it off (I don't wear any kind of foundation or facial makeup, so clogged-up pores aren't a worry). It definitely helps my makeup look more naturally smudgy and sexy, and it works great if I want to build more color on top. I wear contacts and I've never had an issue with my eyes being irritated or infected by day-old makeup. But I do agree that it's not a great practice. Might as well give it a shot every now and then, though.

  5. I NEVER take off my eyeliner. Just pile it on at night, wipe off any migrated mess after the next morning's shower, enjoy the awesome leftover-liner look all day, and pile it on again at night.

I do religiously scrub the rest of my face off before bed though (thanks olay wipes)!!!

  6. i love the look of leftover make-up ! that said, i don't wear foundation or powder or blush, just a light amount eyeliner and mascara. (and when my crazy auto-immune eye inflammation kicks up, nothing at all. yay, blindness !)

i don't wash my face ever, really, and i think my skin is better for it. i used to have a pretty obsessive cleansing schedule, and it left me dry but oily (?). i decided one day to just give up, and it worked out pretty well.

  7. On the rare occasion i try to wash my eye makeup off (thats usually all I wear)it seems like some of it always stays on. So most of the time i don't even bother. Other than that I just splash some cold water on my face, and off to bed.

  8. @Tonia @17beats I am tempted to try this. I finally learned to scrub only *once* a day. But still... I def do not have perfect skin.

    1. OK. so the full story is that several years ago i got sick and had to go to the hospital. i checked in with pimples and checked out (a week later) looking like a china doll -- and i didn't wash my face ONCE while i was there. i think that the IV fluids and massive quantities of antibiotics completely cleared up my skin. it makes sense, i guess. ever since then, i only wash my face with water in the shower and occasionally exfoliate. it turns out my skin is actually pretty dry and cooperative. i think i was just irritating it with all the SHIT i was putting on it.

    2. antibiotics and hydration are literally the two fastest ways to clear up your skin haha

    3. Hm. I still don't think that would work for me. The spring break of my first year of college was spent on the sofa with walking pneumonia. I was on antibiotics and was definitely hydrating myself. I was too tired to shower or wash my face, and it took MONTHS for those zits to clear up.

Staying away from harsh ingredients is super important, though. Even for those of us who are oily. Now I use oils on my face every day (argan, olive, grapeseed, rosehip, primrose) and break outs are greatly diminished. I use Ultrabland from Lush or just oil and hot water to cleanse. It gets pretty much all the makeup off, and then use some rosewater to tone and get the last bit of grime out. My skin never gets dried out, and then I never get oily.

My sister NEVER washes her face, though. She also is older than me and has perkier boobs and no cellulite. That bitch got all the good genes.

    4. drink loads of water with real lemon in it (like 2.5 litres ...sorry Canadian...buy a large Nalgene drink 2 of those) and yes, stop scrubbing your face every day with chemicals. Pat it dry after you've showered. No zits

  9. I totally do that. Mostly out of laziness, but hey. Second day eyeliner and mascara looks amazeballs. The eyeliner gets that whole smudgey-hot bedroom eyes type look, and day two mascara is all colour and no clumps.

I don't really recommend it, per se, but it looks damn good.

  10. For some reason my everyday makeup = terrible in the morning. Full on party face can look pretty good, especially when combined with a slight hangover. Gives a nice flush to your cheeks. I'm almost embarrassed that I know this so well.

  11. It is NOT true that french women don't wash their faces. me and my girlfriends have a daily skin routine including anti aging products since the age of 25. I don't know who told you this but it's hilarious! A french girl who washes her face

    1. A while ago, Garance Dore did a post on not washing her face, so that might be where the notion comes from.

It must be weird being french and hearing the constant "french women" stereotypes.

  12. @17 beats & tonia... i might just go for that. i RARELY washed my face in hs & college, besides in the shower... my skin was gorg. now it is terrible & i've tried everything- antibiotics, daily regimens, hormone therapy... maybe i should just go back to square 1.

  13. You have to eat healthy. THAT is important for your skin. Also I recommend Avène Skincare.
