pleez help shop for the mothers-of-the-bride

You guys, I sat down to do a MOTB dress roundup yesterday and I was L-O-S-T.

I need one for a sweet 61-year-old mom who has lost a lot of weight recently and "looks awesome and deserves to feel awesome too." The event: "an epic destination wedding in Utah for this fall."

And then there's another request for a dress for a petite, fashionable mom "who looks far younger than her 56 years." The event: "a laid-back but elegant wedding at a LA park this summer."

HALP?!

If you would be kind enough to offer your suggestions in the comments below, I'll do a round-up for later this week.

Extra points for dresses that

a) have sleeves
b) cover the knees

  3. What about this? Or this? Maybe this Rachel Roy? Or this Milly? My mom wore this to my wedding last summer and she looked bangin'.

  4. I think the html link thingy is broken...?

  5. This is what my petite, fashionable, looks-way-younger-than-56 mom is wearing to my wedding this summer. She looks AMAZING in it! http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/sue-wong-embellished-sheath-dress/3166766?origin=keywordsearch&resultback=868

  6. This could be nice, I think the model is way too young for it but I can see it on a bride's mother.

I love this one but have doubts about red on a mother of the bride.

Or this one is pretty gorgeous but rather pricey ...

  7. Oops, sorry about that, my second suggestion for the park wedding is this.

  8. for the utah mom: http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/179437

  9. For the LA mom:
The Blooming Whin Shift dress from anthro. Belted, obvi. I love yellow on wise women.

    OR

This turquoise number from Nanette Lepore?

    For the Utah mom:
Alfani three-quarter sleeve dress would create a nice blank canvas for big, bold jewelry.

OR...I'm about to link to Coldwater Creek, so help me god...

This mosaic-print knit dress isn't "wow" but would be flattering on ANYONE and is good colors for fall. Only appropro for a casual wedding, though.

  10. SLEEVES, people. Sleeves. And who the hell is paying $1600+ for a plain gray jersey faux-wrap dress????

  11. For the Utah fall wedding / mom with a rockin' bod, option ONE and TWO.

For the laid-back L.A. mother-of-the-bride, option ONE and TWO.

    Good luck! xo.

  12. I was just at the BHLDN store here in Chicago for the first time and this caught my eye: viscose dress

  13. Undergarments! Undergarments! I can't tell you all how important this is. The lovely ladies of Nordstrom helped my mom find some amazing sent-from-the-future bodysuit, and she bought this before we went dress shopping. It made SUCH a difference in how happy she was trying on clothes. UNDERGARMENTS.

  14. For the petite mom at the park wedding:

One of these MaxMara dresses. Or these Mary Katrantzous. Or if price is no object Erdem or Prabal Gurung.

For the just lost a lot of weight mom, are we still talking plus-sizes? Regardless, she'll want lots of structure. Having trouble finding one that seems right. This David Meister is only available in small sizes but looks formal and elegant and age appropriate without screaming mother of the bride (in that frumpy cliched way).

  15. I'm failing at MOTB options, but can someone please wear this dress
    for their wedding?

  16. I wish you would have posted this a few weeks ago ESB! I went shopping for a MOTB dress with my mom and sister and it was soooo hard to find good choices.

She ended up getting a Michael Kors dress I can't seem to find online. But I loved this Badgley Mischka (long and navy, probably better for fall wedding), and this Badgley Mischka (long but more summery).

  17. For the Utah mom: This Bagley Mischka Peplum Dress is pretty dignified and awesome, but pricey: $440.

For the LA park mom this Coral ASOS Oasis Pleat Dip Hem Midi Dress is fun and $135.

My mom is in petite, in her mid 50s and looks younger than that and she often wears sleeveless dresses and looks great in them, just as long as they are not strapless or too revealing.

  18. I don't even get the concept of a mother-of-the-bride dress. It's not like we turn into sofas when our girls get married. Or is there something I don't know?

      Amen.

It's more like I want my mom to feel pretty because she's excited about the big day and just so happens to be the MOB.

    2. @UTB we knew what you meant. LPC just thinks she's being snarky.

    3. Actually I just thought I was being a) witty b) truthful. I don't understand why MOB is a category. Why doesn't the mother just wear what she likes, all the while remembering it's not her moment to troll for fleshly attention? It feels to me like yet another attempt to ritualize and enforce special purchases, and I doubt one can choose a dress for an unknown 50-year old as we are all quite, quite different.
