BIG BUNZ

This Dream Bun DIY kinda makes me wish I had more hair.

Not only does it look more doable than the Beauty Dept version, it is MORE BIGGARR.

The secret: an athletic sock donut. (or two.)

  3. Hey brunettes: I use a black (or brown if you can find it) athletic sock instead. Otherwise if you throw it up real quick, you risk pops of your bright white secret showing through.

Also my husband caught me doing this to my hair and shook his head and said, "but you think Bumpits are stupid."

  4. The flyaways in this one make me think of newborn babies.

The perfectness of the beauty dept. one is freaky (she looks like a doll).

  5. I use $4 chignon foundation (or as my mom calls it, a "rat") from Sally Beauty. But yeah, using something as a foundation is a lot easier on your hair than backcombing the shit out of it.

  6. This is how I do my big bun and I always get compliments on it! It comes out perfect from the first try.

  7. I totally have a gym sock wrapped in nude pantyhose for this very reason.

(I am fighting a maddening impulse to climb into my computer screen and smooth all those goddamn flyaways down - she looks like she's being electrocuted)

  9. oh yay! I did a big bun for my wedding (rather, my friend/salon owner did) and I still have the donut thing. I have been wanting to recreate it but I am kind of useless at this stuff. Maybe I can do it with these instructions.

  10. Is it just me or is that twisted bra-strap in the last photo making anyone else feel uncomfortable? (In the 'this really isn't the most comfortable bra' sense not 'I cannot believe she is showing off her bra; the hussy' sense)

  12. GENIUS. Love the flyaways. Rock the imperfections. I'm going to cut open a sock right now.

  14. I love sock buns! But my hair is waist length and I have too much leftover hair if I do it this way. What I do is, after I pull the donut over my ponytail, I pull it almost to the ends, so I have 2-3 inches hanging out. Then i fold the ends back over the donut, then roll it back down my hair, pushing the inside to the outside. Kind of like rolling the sock donut in reverse.

No pins. No spare hair. SUPER comfortable. I do it all the time. A great way to deal with sister wife length hair (which I know I should cut, but I LOVE MY CREEPY LONG HAIR DAMNIT)

  15. Adore this. I have pretty long hair (not, like, chatshow long), and my go-to is a ballerina bun. But this is just so much better.

  17. So I have tried this multiple times and I always fail. I've even watched YouTube tutorials. I *think* I have enough hair so I'm not sure what my problem is.

I am a huge hair failure. My poor stylist is constantly bewildered (and very limited) by the things I can't do on my own.

  19. That is so funny - my hair looks that big but without the sock. Sigh. When I tease it, it's twice the size of my head
