Take your budget wedding and shove it*

Thank you, Meg, for writing this post. Now I don't have to.

I do have one thing to add:

I don't approve of soliciting strangers for wedding funds, but I'm also fed up with the implication that you're not ready for marriage until you've saved enough cash to pay for the wedding.

I wanted $400 shoes and I (gasp) put them on a credit card. We also charged the rentals. Anybody have a problem with that? Because I'm done feeling guilty about it.

*Don't shove your wedding silly. Just stop focusing on the budgetbudgetbudget. It makes me depressed.

  2. You know what? If your old enough to get married, you better be old enough to know how to responsibly use credit and make appropriate decisions. Because marriage is nothing if not a serious of "lets figure out what the best choice for us is." Right?

    I'm with you.

  4. hahaha. this made me giggle.

budgeting is good. and so is recognizing that this is a kinda big deal, and well worth a little bit of debt.

    especially if it's shoe debt.

  6. Hey, man, weren't credit cards invented for great shoes?

This post reminds me of that Ya Ya book, which had a great section on waiting. Basically it said that if we all waited until we were really ready (to love, to pay, to be grown-ups), nobody would ever manage to get married at all. Instead, you just have to jump in and figure it out.

I don't think people should have to save every cent before getting hitched. Pff.

  7. Thank you and Meg for talking about this. I've been reading so many different blogs and taking just about everything with a grain of salt but when the time comes for us to start concrete planning instead of what my beloved calls my 'research' we have already discussed how we'll pay for it and part of it will definitely include credit card and/or loans. it will be our choice and we will be the ones responsible for it. starting married life without debt sounds great but for everyone it's not always realistic.

  10. but aren't you so glad you bought kick ass shoes for your wedding that you can keep wearing over and over and love every time you do?

and think, these are my wedding shoes. my what a fun day that was.

that's how i rationalize. of course, i am exceptionally good at rationalization.

and loeffler randall... they are evil and make me want to rationalize myself into line at the soup kitchen.

  12. I love this post. I felt guilty for the longest time after I bought my dress because it was more than what I thought I would spend. In the end I'm happy I did. I love your shoes :)

  13. yay! What they all said + you + Meg! Budgets are important, but there's a reason that economics is called the dismal science. I charged my shoes & my dress. Mom generously gave me an unanticipated check over the weekend, so now I'll pay off those bills.

  14. um. thank you? seriously, i tried to explain to fi that we would never have the money 'saved' before getting engaged. strangely we've managed to pay-as-we-go for most things. except my kate spades... and my dress. so on the card they went, and i'm feeling seriously much better about it now. thank you. enough feeling like $hit for splurging here or there. i did it in every day life before, why should there be such shame for having a few in wedding spending? exactly. thank you. again.

  15. I got married 3 weeks ago, and I was sooooooo stressed about money (tight tight budget) that it almost ruined it for me.
7 days before the wedding my boyfriend told me about the 'room' he had on his credit card.
    It saved sanity that week.
