movie recommends, s'il vous plait

H is out of town, and I've already watched waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much HGTV for my own good. Like, way too much. Also this really embarrassing Bravo show I found on demand, Interior Therapy? Embarrassing.

So I've concocted a radical plan to go to the video store this afternoon. (If it's even still in business. I haven't RENTED a movie in at least two years.)

Here's the short list of stuff I know I want to see:

What am I missing? What's your most favorite movie you've seen in the last little while??

I know you guys have good taste.

  1. Ooh, I liked Beginners. I have no other suggestions. I never go to the movies...you know, except to see shit like Hunger Games. I saw Martha Marcy May Marlene but only thought it was OK. I really can't think what else I've seen.

  5. Those are pretty intense movie picks. To lighten your load, I love "Wild Target" with Emily Blunt and Bill Nighy. And Ron Weasley from Harry Potter....

  7. I don't know if you're into french movies, but here goes:
    - les émotifs anonymes
    - intouchable

I don't know any good recent movies, except for maybe bullhead, haven't seen it myself, but people keep telling me to watch it so I guess maybe you should too?

  9. ooh, marjolijn reminded me: if you haven't seen la fille sur le pont, waste no time. vanessa paradis, marianne faithfull on the soundtrack, erotic knife-throwing - it's a crowd-pleaser.

  10. I thought Take Shelter with Michael Shannon was great. Don't know how much apocalypse you're up for this weekend, but it's a nice companion piece to Melancholia.

  11. Goodbye Lenin, if you don't mind reading subtitles. Micmacs, but only if you really like Jeunet. It is his most, well, Jeunet-ish.FYI, Melancholia is on Netflix instant streaming right now.

  15. Ahhh, HGTV...it's so addicting. Last summer, it was all about House Hunters for me.

As for movies, Shag is the BEST summer ever!

    1. Drive is definitely the best movie I've seen recently, and the way it uses music is amazing. Speaking of, I think I need to go listen to A Real Hero.

  18. I agree with Celia, Drive is immense.

I do this for a living (watch films and report on them I mean, not comment on blogs). Anyway.

    My favourites of last year:

    - Beginners
    - Jane Eyre (Michael Fassbender as Mr Rochester? Genius)
    - Basically anything else with Fass - eg Shame, or even X-Men: First Class at a push
    - Restless - it has Dennis Hopper's son in, and he's actually great
    - Not sure if it's 2010 or 2011, but a Welsh film called Submarine
    - And the Muppets. I kid you not. Most film reviewers I know secretly think it was the best film of 2011.

    1. I just watched this, I thought it was great! Mostly because of the one million movie impersonations and all the ridiculous friend jokes. I was sleepy but laughed a lot, for sure.

  30. an absolute YES to everything on your list so far

THE SKIN I LIVE IN (Spain)
    IN BROGUES (UK)
    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
    ATTACK THE BLOCK (UK)
    BILL CUNNINGHAM NY
    MOTHER (Korea)
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
    WHITE RIBBON (Austria)
    RANGO
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (Original/Scandinavian)

3 of my favorite films off the top of my head are WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINA WOOLF? PAPER MOON and TRUE ROMANCE but I tried to give you more recent films (last 3 years or so) I run an indie movie house in downtown Santa Cruz so I could potentially go on and on...but that may be overwhelming...smile.

Post script: I am getting married in a month and your blog rocks my socks so thanks.

Post Post Script: Don't see the Descendants, waste of brain cells and time. The directors best film is ELECTION, so see that instead if you feel so inclined.

    Cheers,

    Seconded:
50/50 -- great. Angelica Houston makes every movie.
Beginners -- who knew Captain von Trapp could be so FUNNY?
Let the Right One In -- (obv only the original)
Bill Cunningham New York -- he's heartbreaking when asked about his sexuality
Jane Eyre -- Michael Fassbender breaks MY heart with his sexuality

  32. Truly Madly Deeply just for the lead actress and her facial expressions. Alan Rickman is the bonux prize.

  33. The Kids are Alright was pretty good, but maybe that's just because I &heart; Mark Ruffalo. And The Descendents lived up to the hype, in my opinion. I haven't "rented" a movie in years either! And I don't go to the theater except for the Harry Potter movies. :P

  34. Frankly, Midnight In Paris made me want to stick a fork in my eye. I really wanted to like Woody Allen this time around, but that didn't happen.

    Seconding:
Bill Cunningham New York - heartwarming but not in a schmarmy way.

The new Jane Eyre is tense and sexy and Michael Fassbender rocks the hell out of mutton chops.

If you're interested in some vintage gorgeousness, check out The Criterion Collection's La Collectioneuse (cute 1960's French bikinis, good hair, more tense eroticism).

  35. Obvs I need to add Jane Eyre to the list.

  36. Highly recommend The Romantics - Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, Malin Akerman and a whole bunch of other great small roles. Really cool, well-written and acted movie.

    Adaptation.
Employee of the Month (the one with Matt Dillon NOT Dane Cook)

  38. We just watched Blue Hawaii recently... which features Elvis being kind of a jerk, but it's Elvis, and Hawaii! I just tried to start watching the Romantics and I have to admit, it's kind of bumming me out and making me think it's Dawson's Creek. A good question to ask yourself is also, "when was the last time I watched Robin Hood Men In Tights?"

  39. just recently re-watched Four Rooms. had forgotten how good it is.
also, others mentioned In Bruges (!!!) and Weekend. <3
