Seeking: The Perfect Lip Stain

Yo,

Can we get a thread going on lip stains? My fiance told me if he has hot pink lips at the wedding he will be fucking pissed.

My dream list:

>Lasts like 6 hrs
>Lasts through a good amount of kissing
>Lasts through sipping on bourbon

I will take anything minus that creepy makeup tattoo stuff.

I want like juicy as shit fuchsia lips, but I also don't want my fiance to look like he just went to town on a pink popsicle (i tried really hard to come up with a sexual reference for this one, but i got nuttin.)

That is all.

  1. How about a Lush lipstick/lip stain? They're mostly oil based, so they actually absorb partially into your skin rather than just staying on the surface of your lips like other lipsticks. They are actually HARD to get off! Fair warning: make sure you have a lip scrub for the next morning, when you want the colour to come off.

Lush lipsticks are kind of like that black sharpie X you get on the back of your hands when you go to local concerts at dive bars; it stays on you, without smearing all over everything (and everyone) you touch. Some people hate that...but it sounds like just what you're looking for.

    1. agreed!! even though it's a "drug store" brand, it really is the best. i like wearing it under a creamy, clear gloss (otherwise it dries out my lips).

    2. I have this one and I don't like it at all. It lasts maybe three hours on me but is very drying. However, I'm picky as hell about lip products so maybe other people have had better luck with it

    3. This in Smitten. Damn.

    4. I use that shit and love it (and smitten is definitely the right color), but it will definitely come off on your glasses and on your husband. I would try the Fran Wilson Moodmatcher lipsticks (so cheesy-looking but amazingly long lasting), or Lip Tar. Actually screw the "or" -- you should buy all these and experiment, it'll be a blast!

  3. In for the replies. Just yesterday I whined to myself about how lip gloss feels disgusting. I want a tint w/ zero residue.

I do have one of these Tart matte lip crayons that I love.. feels like... minty? when it's on. I got it in a Birchbox so I didn't pick the color. Light pink is actually pretty effing pink. Ima go test it out and see if it wipes off easily. Unrelated, the crayon has a rubberized exterior which is awesome.

  4. I too am interested in finding an awesome, long-lasting lip stain, preferably one that doesn't make your lips feel chapped and gross by the end of the night. So far no luck. I've tried the Revlon lip stain and it is okay...I wouldn't say it is long lasting though, but it doesn't dry out your lips.

Have you thought about lip liner? They tend to last a lot longer than lipstick and don't come off on everything. I love MAC's lip pencil. It's creamy and it lasts a long time. There's also a "longwear" version that I haven't tried.

    1. PS A friend who is always rocking bright lips recommends NYX lip liners which are way cheaper than MAC. The fushia color looks pretty awesome!

  5. I use Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hr Color. It's a matte gloss that stays on forever, unless you're eating something super oily, like butter noodles, then it comes off on the napkin. Lots of colors, and it's a drugstore brand, so not too expensive. I think they have a gloss version too, but I haven't tried it. Plus, I got one that I didn't like the color and had no problems returning it already opened at CVS.

  6. I hate shit on my lips, and I've found two stains that seriously stay all day and aren't too drying on my already dry lips. The first is Josie Maran's Stain, which I actually liked better. There are more color options, it was the least drying, and super flattering. It made my pale, unsubstantial lips look fuller and naturally pink. The caveat is that the formula is like a shitty fountain pen. You can't keep it in your purse, it has to lie tip down in order to get any pigment out. I guess it doesn't matter much if you store it properly and put it on in the morning religiously, but I kept it in my purse and thought it had dried out and returned it. The second is Hourglass Aura Lip Stain. Instead of being like a magic marker, it has a sponge and a clicky turner on the bottom. Two clicks and a couple of swipes and I'm good to go for the rest of the day. The downside is that it is more drying (I just use chapstick the rest of the day), and fewer color choices. I might give the Josie Maran another try after the Hourglass runs out because the colors are so much more natural looking.

    1. Clinique chubby sticks are pretty good, too. I would do a lip stain as a foundation, and then find something lightly glossy to touch up with the rest of the night.

  7. I used Benetint but it isn't bright pink, just a natural looking stain. I usually get a few hours of good wear out of it. I'm pretty sure I didn't reapply during my wedding but I honestly can't remember.

  8. OCC Lip Tar. Super bright, opaque color. Doesn't dry your lips out. stays on through EVERYTHING. Tons of colors, goes one exactly what it looks like in the tube.

    1. Kathryn FTW! I'm little late to the convo but OCC is where it's at. Have it in 3 colors and my bf was very happy that it wasn't all over his face. YSL also has a kickass lip stain too but not sure if they have the color you're looking for.

  9. Most lip stains dry my lips out like crazy and look patchy and uneven. One I really like is the Revlon Kissable Balm Stain in Lovesick, which is fuchsia (it's the one Emma Stone is wearing in the ad, which you've probably seen if you've read a magazine or been in a drugstore in the last year). It feels like a balm and has kind of a creamy texture, but even after the balm goes away, the stain lasts. If you don't want it to end up on your husband, I'd blot it.

    1. I'll vouch for this one-- wore it for a friend's marathon birthday party on Saturday. I've never found a lip stain that actually sticks on the first application (never tried lip tar, though), but I did apply this once at home, again getting off the train and then once more after dinner and wound up having to scrub off the remaining color on Sunday evening. So if you build it up a bit, you'll get a good stain from this product.
I even got all kissy-face with the husband at the bar at the end of the evening and it didn't rub off on him.

  10. lip liner. smudge it a bit. only way to go. lasts for hours and won't rub off. promise

  11. That Revlon Just Bitten is so shitty on it's own, but WAIT.. I found some strange brew which somehow combines in unholy lip matrimony to do the trick:

Just Bitten in Gothic is my 'primer'
followed by Sephora brand Rouge Cream Lip in Courtisane

Never need to reapply.. color stays bright ALL NIGHT. worn as a wedding photographer, bridesmaid, waitress, regular night-on-the-town-er, and plan to wear this combo at my own wedding. when I eventually get to planning it.

I would recommend, if you REALLY want fucking fuchsia:
    stain in "Passion"
cream lip in "Bluish Bright Pink"

    1. I will add that I am not a make-up girl.. I only just recently learned how to put on eyeliner properly, and my morning face routine takes me about 5 minutes...
and consists of: MAC nude eye primer (in Ochre), Maybelline black gel liquid liner, Sephra Mascara, Josie Moran argan oil cheek stick. Sometimes some Dr. Jart BB cream if I'm feeling gross. So yeah. Stick with what you know.

    2. Wait, can we also get a 'how to put on eyeliner' thread going?

    3. Go watch Lisa Eldridge's amazing tutorials if you want to learn how to apply makeup. She's an amazing makeup artist with a great personality and she totally knows her stuff. As an added bonus, her videos are oddly soothing and therapeutic, so much so that I've watched every single one of them at least once (I've had a pretty rough year, and I really enjoy watching them before bed to get my mind off of things). Anyway, she's the best, go to lisaeldridge.com and watch!

  12. Chanel Ultra Wear lipstick. It's not a stain but it is super long lasting, won't come off from kissing. It's the only think I wear anymore. Absolutely worth the Chanel pricetag to not look like an idiot reapplying lipstick all day long.

  13. I used to religiously wear a hot pink lip stain from Estee Lauder. My mom gave it to me b/c it was too bright. I think it was an early version of this stain (which I, unfortunately, can't find for sale anywhere). I'll look around but I think the bottle might have broken, so I doubt I'll be able to share the color... :(

  14. Just want to throw another vote in for OCC Lip Tar. They're also minty and those colors are BRIGHT. They also started making a clear top coat if you want it to be a little less matte.

  15. Benefit Benetint, or I think they have other shades. Looks really dark in the bottle but comes out subtly so you can build it up. So good.

  16. I vote OCC Lip Tar as well...if its a little dry I suggest trying out their new Lip Tar Glosses.

  17. By Terry Aqualip Tint. Looks orange, goes on BRIGHT pink. Doesn't budge and stays and stays. Honestly, I swear by it!

  18. I use the Josie Maran one all the time and, if you do as above commenter mentioned and store it tip down, it really stays put all day. I usually put a lipstick over it, blot and go.

  19. If you scrub and moisturizer first, Stila lip stain
is awesome and will stay on through the honeymoon. Clear gloss on top will make you juicy in a non transferable way...

  20. I love this one from Sephora. I've only tried it in red but they have some brighter pinks as well. It lasts forever and is only $12!

  22. i'll throw one in for smashbox limitless lip stain & color seal balm. i am a fan of sharpie-type-technology in general, but the color really works for me, a perpetual lip licker. i like sangria and guava (may be too warm for your purposes) and go great with a dash of colored gloss to get you closer to the shade you're looking for.

  23. Just to add one that hasn't been mentioned yet, Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge is INSANE. Doesn't budge and the pigment is like nothing else.

(Honestly, the only way I can remove this at the end of the night is with the Make Up For Ever waterproof makeup remover, even my regular makeup remover doesn't work. And, fwiw, my lips never feel chapped/dry/awful after.)

  24. Stila Stay All Day: the jam. I'm using it for my wedding in a true red, but they also have magenta. Someone else recommended Make Up Forever Aqua Rouge, which is pure hell on my lips (gets so dry and balls off), but a lot of people love it, so I'd try both.

  25. I'm tardy to the party BUT I have a solution for you!

L'oreal Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Infinite Fuchsia.

My friend and I were just joking around in CVS and tried this on. We both bought it right then & there. It's a bright but matte fuchsia colour and IT DOESN'T MOVE. The trick is to put it on and let it dry before you do anything. Once it's 100% dry, it lasts all day and doesn't come off (unless you eat really greasy food like another poster mentioned). I can put it on Friday night and it will be there until Sunday morning. It's got an interesting scent but no taste and it goes on with a sponge wand. I usually scrape the colour off the wand and apply a thin layer, otherwise the colour is too much. It's a drugstore brand so it's definitely worth a try.
