What do I wear on my Mexican honeymoon?

Aug 2

ESB -

My fiance and I are planning to abscond to SF for a private ceremony at City Hall before heading south of the border to honeymoon in Mexico this October. We're staying here and absolutely can not wait. I know this sounds like a petty worry in the world of wedding planning hardship, but I'm not getting anywhere on my own, and google is no help.

The thing is - I want to look and feel completely fabulous on my honeymoon. I want to look in my closet and every once in a while come across something that brings me back to the feel and smells and sounds of the days we spend together there. I want our future kids to see photos and think, damn Mom and Dad were sort of hot.

I have done the backpacking thing. I have owned my fair share of Chacos and utilitarian bags. But my hostel days are over and I want to - at least for a week - feel more like an international woman of mystery than a seasoned 'off the beaten path' traveler.

My problem is that I can't seem to find designers or retailers that capture this feel and I don't know how to look for them. Can you or your readers point me toward a place or two that will give this flip flop wearing non-profit gal a little Mexican bond girl style?

A million thanks,

K, what size are you? Aaaaaaaaand are you busty?

Fairly medium all around, size 8 in most bottoms, 6 on top, not particularly busty, definitely bigger hips/legs with somewhat smaller top half.

OMG BEST. You get to wear all the sexy halter-y things that I can't.

Pictured above: Velvet Robbyn Dress ($65 down from $130) at Shopbop, Undrest Brazilian String Bikini from Madewell ($140 down from $200), Tucker Silk Kaftan ($138 down from $345) at Saks,* Valentine Peep-Toe Wedges from Loeffler Randall ($150 down from $375, also avail at Saks)

  1. Easiest/best dilemma ever! Piperlime has some great summer dresses on sale. Like this or this. Kaftans to the beach; flowy, bright dresses at night.

  2. I am also going to Mexico on my honeymoon in a few months. I have been stalking this anthro dress, waiting for it to go on sale. I think it feels just right for the occasion, and will look great in photos.

  3. How about this silk maxi on sale for $182 (originally $435) in a size 8? It's actually a pretty similar look as the dress ESB posted.

  4. There are tons of bright print dresses and caftans at Revolve. Anything white, of course, will feel beachy and glamorous. White shorts are a fun way to do the dressy casaul thing, especially with those sweet Loeffler Randall wedges that ESB posted.

  5. Two things (from someone who was at that hotel last October for a wedding):
    1) it will be hotter.than.shit. Pack way more clothes than you think you need unless you plan on laundering what you have while you are there
    2) the streets are cobblestone and the sidewalks are nuts. Def go with wedges.

  6. i second the calypso st. barth suggestion- first thing i thought of when i saw the title of this post. also- mara hoffman. zappos can get her to you real fast.

i'd buy a few really nice maxi dresses or caftans, and one pair each of killer flats and wedges. light button up blouses you can tie up. also! a big hat!

swell is my go-to surf/beachy reasonably priced clothing store- use their basics to fill in your wardrobe gaps

  7. YES! We stayed at Hacienda San Angel for our honeymoon too! It was beyond dreamy. Just be careful of some of the dogs -- they look white and fluffy, but some bite.

I usually feel sexier when I wear things with a defined waist, as someone who also has big hips but is smaller on top. The drapey look does nothing for me. I packed some ruched jersey dresses from Anthro, some colorful scarves, and comfy sandals (there's a big walk up the hill to the hotel).

Here are a couple I've been eying that I think would suit Mexico:

    fitted waist and beachy

    vintagey cute

There are a lot of good choices above! I might steal some for my brother's Mexico wedding in November.

    Have a great time!
