I've gone over to the dark side.

You guys, after almost three years proudly flying the ad-free owl,* I just put up an ad.

I figure, if I'm recommending dresses from net-a-porter, and you're recommending dresses from net-a-porter, I might as well get a little goddam money from net-a-porter.

But I do feel pretty conflicted about this. I mean, they're not even an "indie" business. Do I need to change my header now?? I could go with something like, "snarky wedding planning advice and also… shopping!"

Actually, that would be a lot more accurate.

  1. Psh. Who gives a fuck about what's technically "indie"? Isn't that the point?

Besides, blogging is hard work. And you deserve some pay off for that work.

  2. this means you get to keep cable, right?

also, whenever i think about accepting adds on my blog i think "what will ESB think"

i dont have to worry about that anymore. ;)

  3. You go. Money isn't an automatic sin. Plus, I use you as a benchmark of style, and I'm old and forgetful, so it's USEFUL to have you point me to things on net-a-porter.

  4. ESB, you don't have to apologize for putting up an ad, or anything else you do. It's YOUR blog, and if we don't like it, I'm sure you have many colourfully hilarious ways of telling us where to shove our opinions.

Just be thankful enough people read your blog that people actually want to advertise there! Some of us are not so talented or lucky =).

  5. also? you're accepting ads so that you can keep on keepin' on in the arts. did anyone else notice that the tweeps bitching the loudest about the lack of ladies recognized at the golden globes last night were women who had left the theatre/film industry themselves?

do what you do, ad-takin' lady filmmaker. i'm proud of you.

  6. Good for you. Net-a-porter is more stylish than that owl, anyways.

  7. Every little bit helps, no?

But if you ever start putting up pop-ups or neon-flashy-automatically-talk-and-play-music-at-you ads, I might have to say something.

  11. Rock those ads. Your time is worth $, so get some.

  12. As long as you are putting up ads with businesses you like, I only see positive things. The minute you put up a J Crew ad though...well then you will have truly gone over to the dark side.

  15. I leave the country for a week and now there are ads on ESB?!

Only kidding :) I mean seriously, you might as well be getting a little kickback courtesy of our friends at net-a-porter.

Also, it's a very tasteful ad if I do say so myself!

  16. By which I mean, oooo, I could totally go and waste some time there of now dribbling at the pretty things.

  17. Funny - it's inspiring to have no-ads and brilliant that you're earning money (as long as they're not annoying ads)

    Also I second Jamie - :)

God the human mind is weird.

  19. Haha! YES! Selling out is not a bad thing. It just means you believe in being compensated for all the hours and work you put into this. Way to go!

  20. whatever makes it so you can keep doin what you doin is fine with me!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. absolutely no worries. i think you're pretty clearly stating, i already loved net-a-porter...i always recommended it...it's not influencing your recommendations, it's paying you back for being such a loyal fan.

  22. it could be worse... it could be ModCloth.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Ashley I PROMISE YOU WILL NEVER SEE AN AD FOR MODCLOTH. (Or J. Crew, obv)

  24. ha! That would take your blogging to the next level.

  25. I get so much enjoyment and information from this blog, it brings me a lot of joy to know you can make some cash. I say go for it!

  26. Do whatever you want 'cause we love ya. And we no you aint puttin' up no nasty ads.

  27. Is "indy" even really indy anymore? It seems to me Indy has become just another category for marketers. Who gives a flying f*ck - do what you gotta do and make that cash. From an aesthetic perspective the ad is very non-obtrusive, and that says a lot.

  28. You DID go over to the dark side, and I never thought you would. It kind of changes the badassness tough-shit persona, but I don't think any less of you.

    ReplyDelete
  29. selling out is doing for money something you wouldn't do for free.

    ReplyDelete
  30. hahaha...the picture is hilarious...no amount of net-a-porter is going to take away from your sense of humor...blog on.

  31. emm, i remember a certain SOMEONE making a big deal out of promoting my fledgling business on my own little blog.

    jussayin.

    <3 you anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  32. f-it, you promote them anyways. might as well make some cash. i'm conflicted too, but i would like hbo back, so i'd even consider modcloth. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Um, you do a lot of work. You totally deserve to get something for it. No judgment.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I really dont give two hoots about the 'principle' of ads on blogs.
And I actually thing your ad is *exciting*.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just as long as you don't start seeking advertisers in your posts, you're good... that sh*t is obnoxious.
