Wanted: Wedding Wrap for a free-love, barefoot, diamond-ring-craving material girl

Dear East Side Bride,

I will be wearing this lace, Monique Lhuillier, dress for my upcoming August Wedding. Our wedding is being held at our favorite Summer camp spot in Western Washington, with guests camping/cabin-ing all weekend, and all the bohemian, tree-hugging, activity and mischief I could ever dream of...or so that is the hope. We are not going for a theme aside from controlled chaos and the great outdoors, but we do have all the MAJOR traditions that make up a wedding covered: live music, food, open bar, flowers, even a seating chart.

So here is where I am hung up. I am a Gemini, and I never even for a second played into Astronomy predictions or horoscopes...until I started planning a wedding. I am part free-love, barefoot, flower goddess, and part diamond-ring-craving, Kate-Spade-wearing, "Can you add some more sparkles to my prom corsage?" material girl. I need some suggestions on accessorizing my simple wedding gown, in particular an overcoat, shawl, cape...for chilly Washington evenings around a rustic/yet glamorous camp-fire.

Help a Gemini find her wedding style PLEASE.

*****

No idea how you can be free-love and diamond-ring-craving. Or barefoot and Kate-Spade-wearing, for that matter.

But.

I FOUND A SPARKLY SHRUG FOR YOU!

$99 down from $484 (if Gilt is to be believed)

Let me know if you need an invite or whatever. I can't remember how it works.

  1. Of course someone can be both. My sister, who is both smart and nice, two rarely paired attributes, calls it the 'And' Model Of Identity. It's common in people whose families uproot. Also, that same sister wore a wrap to her wedding which was a matte woven fabric (maybe wool/silk), with glossy satin trim. Was quite lovely.

    1. Smart and nice are two rarely paired attributes?

    2. I know many, many smart and nice people. Like most of the smart people I know are nice (not most of the nice people, but . . . )

    3. have to agree with the dissenters here. the smartest people i know are actually the kindest people i know.

    4. This so-called "And" Model of Identity seems awfully tied up in OP's AESTHETIC tastes, NOT her working ETHICS. I've got no problems with eclectic taste whatsoever, but when someone wants to conflate aesthetics with ethics, I get kind of pissed. "Free-love, barefoot, flower goddess" as a LOOK is one thing, and I could see that mashed up against a "material girl" look. But, honey child, stop pretending you are all folksy and nature-lovin' when you're wearing sweatshop lace and blood diamonds.

    5. I work in high tech. In my world, for whatever reason, so many, many, many smart people are not remotely nice. I am glad to hear it's a localized problem.

  2. I'm having a hard time picturing the combination of glamorous and rustic. Is it weird I think you should wear this? I just can't imagine you sitting on a LOG around a campfire in your Monique Lhuillier lace gown. Also it looks heavy.

  3. If it gets cold she wants something pretty/sparkley to put on over her wedding dress. I support that. And sparkles. I like ESB's but it doesn't provide much extra coverage.

How about this gold sequin jacket, or this sparkly navy silk one? It could even be your something blue, if you're into that.

  4. I vote for the silver moto jacket. It's shiny, not sparkly but would keep her warm and bring out both sides of her personality.

    1. ditto for the silver moto jacket. Although the sparkly navy silk thing from the other Sara would be awesome too.

  5. i think something like rachel's gorgeous wedding shrug would work well here; the shape sez "free spirit," and the shine sez "sparklepuss." alice + olivia seem to have some sort of variation on that each season, as does vince.

  6. As someone who wasted hours of her life searching for a sparkly shrug, I recommend using all combinations of the following terms "sequined" "shrug" "bolero" "sparkly" and possibly "crocheted" or "knitted" (I like the drape of a crocheted shrug, so that it doesn't end up too stiff).

As LMO notes, alice + olivia comes out with one each year, but sadly I think you're falling in the intermediate, sequin-less time of the year, because they're usually part of the winter collections and by now all the sales from last winter are gone. You might still have luck on ebay or if you check lots of other retailers online. Hence, the searching.

    Good luck!

    1. I tried to wear sequins today but felt like a tool because it's summer.

  8. Are you an XS per chance? This gold sequin puff-sleeve blazer might not be exactly what you were hoping for but it would be awfully pretty with your dress!

    1. ...My other suggestion is a faux-cashmere throw blanket.

    2. That would be my suggestion - pile up blankets by the fire and if/when it gets cold wrap up in one.

  9. Astronomy = the scientific study of celestial objects. Astrology = bullshit generalisations about the date you were born. I think you mean the latter.

  10. I am weirdly into this black Amanda Wakeley knottet silk-chiffon wrap (also in pomegranate!)

but if money's no option, this cashmere cocoon by The Row is kind of my fantasy cardigan

  11. So I have have the exact same dress as OP for my wedding, which is a beach destination wedding. My question is -- what jewelry, if any? I am not wearing a veil, just hair in low bun with flower.

Also, here is another photo of the dress, I feel like it's hard to get a sense of the dress in the first link: Dress

  12. This Alannah Hill the Fly Me to the Moon cape might do the trick, in silver.

Actually, Alannah Hill makes heaps of sparkly shit that might fit the bill, and she definitely ships overseas - see also the Bless Your Heart cape in pink, the My Lemonade Tears bolero, the Lost My Nerve stole, the I Stabbed Him! bolero in gold, and the Help Me! Please Help Me cardi.

(I don't know why they have such weird names. Attention-seeking behaviour?)

  13. I always come on here and say "at my wedding..." It's obnoxious but I probably won't stop doing it.

I got married at a camp and definitely debated the fashion virtues of going the casual route, and looking more natural with my surroundings, or totally going glam--doing kind of a borderline-amusing juxtaposition of a metric-shit-ton of sequins against the trees and lake and dirt...

Which might have happened if I had enough money (I'm talking like this, this or these). I ended up going the casual route and being super comfortable.

I don't think your dress is either of these things (it's more just traditional-formal), but I think a cover-up could tip it in either direction. So either go homey (like the blanket suggestion or some of the cozier sweaters or this) or go BIG BIG BIG (like this or this).

In the end, if you are sitting around the campfire in your dress, you are a very different kind of person than me.
