for the preggo bridesmaid

these hatch collection dresses are pretty great.

but wait until you're ACTUALLY PREGNANT to buy one, mkay?

a secret maternity dress in the closet is even worse than a secret wedding dress, imho.

  1. Yes. But this is my official, anonymous request that no one ever select a dress for a pregnant bridesmaid. Your friend is uncomfortable already; let her pick her own.

    1. I may start quoting you on that.

    2. Frig yes... getting that shit altered later so you still look like all the other bridesmaids while you're 6 months preggers with twins sucks balls.

  2. Does anyone else think it's strange that all the models are wearing funny looking baby bump pillows on their belly?

I guess it's too hard to make an actually pregnant lady look glamorous and model-like?

  4. I once accidentally bought a maternity sweater. It was the exact same material, and was shoved in the regular sweater pile. I just pulled out my size and went home. I realized it when I tried it on and it was huge around the middle, then i noticed the giant "MATERNITY" tag. I swore and shoved it in my closet. My boyfriend later found it and thought I was hiding a pregnancy from him. "i bought it by accident" sounded so retardly ridiculous.

    1. Omg that happened to me too! Although mine was a stretchy long sleeve shirt. I just wore it under a cardigan!!! I thought I was the only retard to do this in the history of the world. This is the first time this story has been told. To anyone.

    2. 2 people using "retarded" = not classy, totally offensive

    3. Seconded, Anon 7:34. It baffles me whenever adults use "retarded" to mean "stupid." Offensive and ignorant.

  5. I am the matron of honor in my best friend's wedding next weekend and I will be about 6 1/2 months pregnant. Even in day-to-day shopping I've been appalled at how unflattering most maternity wear is. I think ESB has amazing finding skills, but I personally think that any dress that makes a pregnant lady look more shapeless (although that may sound ironic) or blobby than she already feels is a shame.

I'm wearing this dress, in a size 8 (I used to wear a 4 or so) and I'm a size 40D bra right now. Anyway, I think this dress is surprisingly flattering although it is not maternity. Show off that baby cleavage! Although they don't have it in a true champagne, it's difficult to be picky when pregnant. If you don't like this dress (or some others available at Nordstrom), I'd definitely suggest trying on regular dresses in a larger size than you'd typically wear. If you buy a dress a month or two in advance, make sure to try it on again 2+ weeks before the wedding, because sometimes the belly goes through growth spurts.

Here is a photo of me in this dress at 6 months, to give you an idea of how it looks.

    Good luck to you!

  6. Hatch maternity have really done a good blogger advertising drive lately.

As a pregnant gal these dresses look atrocious (styled oh so very nicely on the models) If I wanted a really unflattering dress, I could do it much cheaper.

I don't mind some of the designs for tops and the pants but the dresses - gross.

    1. Totally agree. Every time I see them pop up on a blog (which is A LOT), I cringe. I find that, for myself and many many MANY pregnant friends, women tend to feel much better about themselves when they keep things fitted. As a stylist, I suspect these dresses are clipped in the back to make them 'fit' and not look so frumpy.
      Over these peeps.

    2. Amen to the fitted.

  7. Honestly, these dresses look like they could only possibly work for super skinny pregnant women -- which, you know, are pretty rare. Boo.

  8. I've considered getting knocked up for the Hatch dresses. Why are they so pretty and look so comfortable?
