HALP I NEED RUNNING MUSIC

4 days into a 10-day visit with in-laws and I have become an AVID RUNNER.

Yesterday I even went out and bought myself a pair of actual running shoes. (2 days x 5 miles in "casual" athletic shoes = 1 enormous blister + 2 sore ankles.)

So here's my question: WHAT SHOULD I BE LISTENING TO?

Most of my old workout faves aren't fast-paced enough.

You guys have been killing it lately, b/t/w. Did I even mention I bought the Blu Dot table after this one turned out to be too big? I think I ought to just crowd-source everything from now on.

  1. I had a brief foray into running a couple of years ago (before I realized I have a heart murmur) and it ended in disaster. However, I made some pretty good running mixes. I will have to dig at home + see if I can find them, but I do remember loving "Sour Cherry" by The Kills.

  2. Probably not your style, but here's an entire website of free running mixes, all controlled for tempo/different speeds:

    http://www.djsteveboy.com/mixes.html

The music isn't my favorite, but I like them a lot for running.

  3. I run a lot but almost never with music, but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "It's Blitz" album always makes me feel I could run up a mountain.

    1. Yes! Totally agree with this. Great running album. Also, LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Jay-Z and Kanye's album, and perhaps my number one favorite for running.... Robyn's Body Talk album.

    2. Second LCD Soundsystem. Also, if you're not sick of hearing it already, "I Love It" by Icona Pop.

  7. Survivor by Destiny's Child. Always and forever.
Flogging Molly is good to - nice consistent beats

  8. Two Door Cinema Club, The XX and Michael Jackson keep my runs moving :) that, and Pandora

  9. I actually love audiobooks or podcasts for running...not super motivating in terms of tempo/pace, but it does force me to stay out there longer so I can hear the end of the chapter.

Also enjoy The Go! Team for running.

    1. Yes, I occasionally end up crying on my run, but both Radiolab and This American Life = steady pacing and endurance challenges.

    2. I have definitely ended up crying at Snap Judgement. But workouts make me want to cry anyway, so

      Delete
    2. It is though if you are new to running I would recommend the 5k one and working up to the other one...I also have had friends do it too just because they love the story so much! I also like how it cuts in and out of your songs really smoothly.

      Delete
  15. Well, I really think it depends on how far you're running. A long run for me is anything over 5miles. And for those I need a good plodding beat. My go-to is The Strokes (specifically the album Is This It). If I'm feeling a bit on the poky side and just want to relax, Bob Marley or Queen. And if I want to do a short, quick run...top 100 music all the way. Beyonce, Britney, Eminem, Lady Gaga. All music I'd NEVER listen to if I wasn't running. BUT, it gets the job done. hahaha :)

    5. Spotify and Pandora serve totally different purposes. I use them both: Spotify to find specific stuff, Pandora for discovery... which is still a million times better at that than Spotify Radio, so not at all archaic in my book. I should probs try out Rdio as a Spotify alternative because yeah, that facebook shit is annoying.

    6. Songza... better than both Spotify and Pandora

Teddybears - Automatic Lover, although this one is a bit slower

Kid Cudi - Dat New New, Viking remix. Kid Cudi isn't really my... style... but this remix is great. Give it a chance to the 1 min mark.

  21. I'm all about Girl Talk for working out, either "All Day" or "Feed the Animals" albums. You can kind of zone in and out of listening and tracks always seem to pick up and kick ass right when you need it.

    1. Yep. I was going to recommend Girl Talk, too. Love. Night Ripper is my favorite, though, I think.

I'd have to go look up my old work out mix but I know my favorite specific song is "The New Workout Plan" from Kanye's College Dropout album.

  24. I've been too lazy to make any new running mixes so I've been using the Pandora stations instead. Their Pop and Hip Hop Power Workout station usually pulls through for me.

But now I'm taking notes and resolving to be more pro-active.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes to the Pop and Hip Hop workout station on Pandora. Sometimes gets a little repetative but depends on how frequently you run.

They also have a Rap Strength Training station if you're in less of a "fun run" mood and more of a "I'm going to break the concrete with my angry feet" run.

Last Pandora station I think eveyone should have for working out/life in general: Beyonce.

  25. The new charli xcx and Justin Timberlake are both fantastic for running, particularly the JT tracks featuring and produced by Timbaland (Don't Hold the Wall, Tunnel Vision).

  26. Spotify. The Tunigo app has great curated playlists for everything from the hyper-specific "Running High Tempo > 140 bpm" to "Cool Indie Runnings."

  27. Three songs that I can put on repeat during long runs to keep me moving:
    'Lose Yourself' - Eminem
    'Jesus Walks' - Kanye
    'Don't Tread' - Clint Dempsey

I also enjoy 'Girls' by Beyonce, 'Golddigger' by Kanye and 'Country must be country wide' (if you don't mind a little country).

  31. Because I am pretty fucking literal, my first song is always Springsteen, Born to Run - I hate that moment when you leave the house and have to casually move from a walk to a run and something about the self-mockery helps me through that first awkward block and a half, like I'm in on my own joke.

  32. MIA's first album, Arular is a running must + her new-ish track Bad Girls. Also Justice's Cross.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I took these from my Bitchface playlist, but that's how I look when I run, so:

Fix up, Look Sharp - Dizzee Rascal
    Lose Control - Missy Elliott
Hate on Me - Jill Scott

    More fun, less bitchface:
The entire Safari Disco Club album by Yelle. Over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I probably run slower than most folks, so these might be a tad too mellow beat-wise:

    Creator by Santigold
    What You Need by INXS
    Cissy Strut by The Meters
Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club
Goin' Up the Country by Canned Heat
I Need A Man by The Eurythmics
I'll Be Around (Club Remix) by Cee-Lo & Timbaland
Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See by Busta
Shake It Out by Florence and the Machine
    Stone Rollin' by Raphael Saadiq
Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles

Also, way to go with the running!!

  35. Also the Rye Rye remix of Robyn's Never will be mine. Catchiest thing evar.

    1. Oh man, I completely overlooked Robyn. This is fantastic.

  36. I admit it is pretty random (and ancient) but somehow Queen's "I want to ride my bicycle" is my go to tune when I need help up a hill...I'm sure Freud would have had a field day with that one. So love your running trainers!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love the Marnie Stern album This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That. Usually use it as wake-the-fuck-up music, but it'd probably pump you up for a run, too.

Like others have mentioned, Robyn & LCD Soundsystem, especially Sound of Silver.

I've been weirdly into kpop lately, despite speaking zero Korean. "I Am the Best" by 2NE1 is an awesome song for running.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm maybe a weirdo here, but I actually prefer to listen to more chill music when I'm running - I run fairly long distances (for me, anyways) so I find if I have music that's too pumped up, I just burn myself out. So I run a lot to Yeasayer, Bon Iver, Broken Bells, Iron and Wine, and the Acorn.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like the free Indie Soup Runner podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Songza has a couple of fun workout/runningmixes

    It helps to have variety.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ugh. I'm hoping my anon comment might cancel out the two above me.

I prefer podcasts (TAL, Risk, Snap Judgment, Radiolab, Smart People, god that list makes me sound insufferable) but before I figured out that the music's beat messed with my rhythm I kept Moving Units, The Stooges, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, The Detroit Cobras and Block Party in pretty constant rotation.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Marina and the Diamonds always pump me up. Also, Sahara Hotnights have a good number of up temp running ones (Hot Night Crash and Who Do You Dance For?). And Robyn, Crash and Burn Girl in particular makes me work out harder.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Laura Mvula's "Sing to the Moon"

It's not consistently fast paced--although it has moments "Green Garden" has a nice beat--but the album is SO good, and surprising lyrics like "She don't stop; she don't stop" in "She" are definitely running appropriate. I've run to the album a handful of times.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Beth Ditto's I wrote the book! I wish there was a whole record of this sound from her...

  45. these are all so embarrassing so turning on the anon...
but ke$ha gets me GOING GOING
david guetta - every chance we get we run (literal pick), in my head, i'm a machine, turn me on, who's that chick
call me on broken glass - the annie lennox/cary rae j mashup
    chris brown - beautiful people
calvin harris - feel so close
macklemore and ryan lewis - can't hold us
    anything alphabeat
    and yeah.. ROBYN

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'd like to ditto whoever said to get a Spotify subscript on your phone- I run 30-60 miles/week and this is how I get by. Currents on my run list are Ellie Goulding, My Morning Jacket, and oddly enough the new Fall Out Boy album. You can't go wrong with anything Yeah Yeah Yeahs, either.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gotta Gettaway, Stiff Little Fingers is the opening song on my playlist
Don't Upset the Rhythm, Wild Young Hearts
Robyn, as suggested by a bunch of others
Also the Scream 4 soundtrack (I know) has a bunch of songs that I like to run to, including Bad Karma, Something to Die For, and Run for Your Life.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I like to listen to M.I.A. while I run!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Just listen to anything that's over 180 beats per minute. That's your basic running tempo. That way you can listen to WHATEVER songs strike your fancy. Personally, I run to a lot of New Wave 80's music because #1- It's ridiculous, and #2- Most songs fall within 180 bpm or faster. And I believe you can even do an itunes search for songs that fall within that tempo range. Welcome to the running club!

  53. This American Life Podcast. Yes.

  54. That depends on the music you like. I'm a huge fan of mixes when I run. Lately this Boiler Room set is just lighting my life on fire. Brenmar and DJ Mike Q back to back. You'll need to sign into Soundcloud to download but that's easily done with Facebook or Google.

I'm also really into basically any mix put out by Dis Magazine. I still return to this Kilbourne mix, which gives major dilated pupil 90s happy house (turns out that's a seriously fun genre to revisit) realness.

Also, the new Zebra Katz mixtape is out and it is gorgeous and plush and dark and sexy and fierce and EVERYTHING. CANNOT recommend it more highly.
