An update from the tiny house

1. We ditched our dying microwave and put a plant in its place on top of the refrigerator. I'm feeling VERY pleased with us.

2. We sold H's dying Jeep Cherokee, and now we're down to one car. Again. I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, Hooray! We'll lower our insurance rates. That car was a gas guzzler. And while we're both working from home, we really don't need two cars. Like, really don’t need two cars.

On the other hand, the Jeep was really fun to drive. And H always seems to have a spontaneous 4 hour meeting with a client right when I want to go to yoga.

WOW I SOUND LIKE AN ASSHOLE WHEN I ACTUALLY TYPE THAT OUT. (Mention yoga, you sound like an asshole. When will I learn??)

3. I bought a string of lights I want to hang inside the house, like so. But I’m not sure what to hang them from. A tree branch? An antler? A a big fat nail? I want it to look, you know, sexy but accidental.

I welcome your suggestions.

(Eleonore Bridge's lovely Smeg via Design*Sponge. We don't have a lovely Smeg. We have a not-too-ugly grey LG.)

  1. I have those lights! And hung them on an Ekby Valter bracket from Ikea! (which looks a lot like that pinned image). They're kinda too heavy for a nail, I feel like.

Love your plants on top of your Smeg.

  2. Yeah, a nail wouldn't work. but you could do a cluster of nails (like those badass brass triangle head nails). Space them close enough to mimic that original look, but wide enough to notice the awesomeness of the nail itself.

Branch could be cool, or maybe a branch wall hook, a la zis?

  3. Is that your Smeg? Adorable. For real.

  4. I thought for a second it was your fridge. Then I knew that a) you wouldn't have a powder blue Smug and b) you will never post a picture of your home.

  5. Did you know that your lights cause cancer and birth defects? Says so right there on the shop. DON'T EAT THEM.

    1. Is that like when your curling iron has a warning label on it NOT to use it to curl your eyelashes?

  6. We've been living without a microwave for about 3 years now and don't miss having one at all. The extra counter space is glorious.

  7. I don't have a microwave and it's the tits. Or rather...sometimes it's annoying but it keeps me from eating a load of shit.

  8. we've wanted to hang globe lights above our balcony for years, but that whole "aversion to tumbling off a ladder and plummeting 18 stories to my death" thing keeps harshing the vibe.

  9. We only had one car for the 2 years we lived in Seattle and now that we're back in Denver we're still going to stick with just one.

Ride a bike to yoga, just don't mention it to anyone.

  13. We used party globe lights for our wedding under my parents back porch, a nail worked just fine. The lights are still up, by the way. Just hang em.

  14. We've only had one car for a little over 2 years and I've always loved it. Now we just moved to Oregon and it's winter and rainy and biking just doesn't seem as fun, so I'm loving the one car thing a little less, but not enough to make a change. We also didn't have a microwave for 2 years and I LOVED not having a microwave and now this rental came with a microwave and I feel like cancer is eating my brain just looking at it. Which probably means that I should see a therapist. Anyways, just thought I would share. Love the personal posts!

  16. We're still surviving with only one car and I won't lie, it is pretty annoying a certain percentage of the time (maybe 3 days per week?) but man, do I love having the extra money that we'd otherwise have to spend on insurance, gas, parking, etc. I'm hoping we can hold out a bit longer.

  18. I second iron hook! Like this or this. I like the simplicity with a subtle contrast in materials

  19. Have you thought about joining Zipcar (or some other car-share service)? My fiance and I don't have a car at all (parking is horrendous in our area and neither of us needs one to get to work). Zipcar is way cheaper than owning a car (at least for the amount we use it), and it seems like it would be a great solution to the "suddenly we both need the car this afternoon!" problem. :)
