Great racks and low backs.... CELIA EDITION

Hi!

I've got a boobs dilemma for you. My wedding dress has a low back, but also has straps. I've got giant boobs, so I can't wear one of those strapless bras that stick to your sides - it won't be enough support.

I went to department stores, bridal stores and VS - none carried a corset (which I need for support) with a low back. I ordered this one online and it's pretty much perfect - low enough in the back and I can even wear the straps because they match up with the straps on my dress; however, the line where the corset cuts off shows through. Back it went.

Now I know I need a bodysuit, not corset, with a low back. Preferably with removable straps, or tight enough to give me the support I'll need.

On that front, here's what I've found:

This comes in S-M-L sizes which makes me think it won't be big enough cups.

Here's a totally weird looking one w/ same S-M-L issue.

I think this could be a good option, just not sure if that boning will show through.

This looks like one of the best options, but I need something like 34DD or 34E/F, and they're out of everything but 38s.

Suggestions? Didn't think the bra would be harder to find than the dress, but here I am...

Here's Celia to save the day....

Hello Low Back,

Without seeing your dress, it's not easy to figure out exactly what you need. However, anyone with a larger chest should never, EVER consider buying any bra/bustier that comes in s/m/l. I recently flew to my parent's house for a weekend and forgot my swimsuit. I stupidly thought I could get away with buying a size 10 suit (I wear a size 6) because I figured a larger suit would be larger in the bust. I ended up with a suit that sags on my ass and can barely contain my nipples. Thank the Baby Jesus, I only had to wear it in my family's backyard and that I had a properly fitting D-cup suit back home.

Anyway, I have a feeling this is the answer to all your prayers. And next time, find a bra before committing to the dress. You should know better, Ms. 34DD.

Love,
C

p.s. Celia answered another one (re: pregnant boobs) over on her blog. Way helpful if you're pregnant or one day hope to be, a teence horrifying for the rest of us.

  1. Thanks, Celia! I'm afraid that one doesn't look like it has a low enough back, though. You are right, though. Find the bra then the dress!

    2. I've actually never been able to find it online. I bought it from a consignment place, and I guess it was a sample from a previous season. Anyway, not really a fan of this one, but has a similar fit with low back (no weird strap w/ bow though): http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/668227780/Simple_and_Beautiful_Bridal_Satin_Boat.html

    3. dude, michaela. that is a VERY low back for someone with such a serious rack. but what's done is done. if you're really in need of support, i think the one you linked to with the boning is going to be your best option. a bodysuit with such a low back and no boning isn't going to do shit for you. is the dress lined? a good, thick lining should conceal the boning. maybe talk to a tailor about working something out?

    4. Woof. Really screwed the pooch on this one. Maybe I'll order that one to see if it will work. The dress is a high quality, thick satin material, but can't remember the lining situation. I just know that the bottom of the first corset I ordered created a distinctive line. Thanks for the help!

    5. I have a similar situation with my dress and my basque (the bottom line). High waisted control top underwear/spanx should do the trick if you need the support of the bra and can see the boning. Remember that "smooth line" everyone talks about with that shit. It works.

  2. I went to a number of specialty stores and ordered a number of products online before I had to relinquish my backless dress and start over. The one thing one of the wise elder bra ladies suggested was having cups sewn into the dress, if the dress can accomodate it. There are also extenders that convert regular bras into lower backed bras but I too found they weren't low enough for me, and made my breasts appear saggy in front. Good luck and godspeed - I wish I could have made it work!

    1. Yes to sewn-in-cups! Granted my boobs are C's but I didn't need to wear a bra with my dress because of the cups in the bodice and I had good support and (ahem) a lovely amount of cleavage even whist dancing like a maniac.

I tried on numerous bras beforehand and they all wanted to slip around after I started sweating. Plus most of them gave my boobs a weird shape. No bueno.

    2. If you are a D+ you cannot possibly rock sewn in cups. Unless you the like the "my boobs are hanging out around my bellybutton" look.

    3. It depends on the dress. Mine was structured and had a high waist. I really think a booby-er person could have worn it with no problem. But, how do all the celebrities always wear plunging necklines and low-backs without flashing the whole world? There must be a secret we're all missing out on. Can a Kardashian please chime in? KIDDING, KIDDING...

    4. a. thank you, miss k.

      b. very few celebrities are rocking D or even DD+ tits, and if they are, they are not *natural* in most cases. fake tits don't exactly sit the same as real tits.

    5. I was just gonna say -- get thee to a GOOD tailor. I'm DD and the sewn-in bra situation my tailor constructed did the trick (granted, there was no low-back issue).

  3. If you have huge boobs, do not ever, under any circumstances, attempt to by a bra at VS. Srsly, people.

Also, the final option from your original letter is now available in 34DD, 34E, and 34F.

    1. yes, it took me 20-odd years post puberty to figure that one out.

    2. Agreed! Having a proper bra fitting has revolutionized my boob life.

Unfortunately that final option is only available in the right sizes in black - nearly totally sold out of nude, aside from the 38s.

  4. I normally wear a 34DD and bought several strapless bras before I realized that once my dress was altered it was super tight and I didn't need a bra. I had some cup-like thingies that came in the dress and gave enough coverage and shaping. I had some serious cleavage just from the boning on the bodice. Of course that doesn't help if you have a flowy dress, but if not you might not have to worry about the bra.

    1. the main difference between a strapless dress and a low back dress is that it has a back to help squeeze those suckers in. not having a back can actually be way more problematic for a large bust than not having straps.

      Delete
    2. Great point. The squeezing was key!

  5. i know it's not a bodysuit and I know it's really very expensive (at least for my cheap ass!) but after a ton of "this is only one day" spending guilt I splurged and got this. It ruled. The back is plenty low, it's long so there was no see-through/gapping issues, it comes in white and beige depending on where you buy it from and it felt like my boobs were on a cloud made of baby angels.

  6. Who are all of these girls with giant boobs but no backfat such that they can wear backless dresses?! Even if I could find a way to contain my boobs, my back wouldn't look good in a backless dress. Maybe just because I'm old. In college I didn't have backfat.

  7. Have you had a dress fitting yet? This just seems like something the seamstress should be able to solve. They can take one of the body suits take off the top and replace with cups that fit. You can take the boning out of the corset, replace the hem with stretch lace, etc. My boobs are larger and I wore one of the VaBien bustiers on Her Room.

  8. Isn't a bodysuit going to be super difficult to get out of in the bathroom? unless it has, you know, 'buttons'.

  9. Celia, where do you shop for swim suits? I am a 32DDD and really struggle to find anything that fits. Halter top swim suits just hurt my neck!

    2. ASOS, all the way. They carry awesome Freya bathing suits but also cheaper, in-house models, all in cup sizes. Free shipping both ways, too!

    3. Seafolly makes some great suits with generous busts and support.

  10. I have small enough boobs (36 c) so this probably won't help, but I have had to buy a crazy contraption for my dress. It's similar to the links the OP posted but it was custom made. This meant that the back could be lowered to suit the dress. The straps go straight down the back, kind of like this but with adjustable straps and proper cups in the front. But it does have a swimsuit/leotard thing going on.
The seamstress I'm using recommended the place where I got the underwear, she measured me and said that things like this were common enough these days. I'm in Ireland so there's no point linking to them, but maybe ask a seamstress where to go?
I'm not sure if it would work for big boobs but thought I'd chime in anyway!

  11. This will probably cost more than the dress, but these people know what they're doing (Burning Man trigger warning).

  12. Hi Michaela! I wear a 34D and had a low back dress. I wore this bodysuit underneath, which is also low cut in the front. Here is another similar option by a different company. I had the seamstress doing alterations on the dress sew horizontal darts in the bodysuit to bring the back down even lower. She also sewed eyes just next to the straps with matching hooks on my dress, plus hooks and eyes on the front, to keep everything in place.
