Dear ESB: My SIL is copping my style

Now I realize what I'm about to say is going to sound really silly and petty, but hear me out. My future sister in law is getting married very soon, I too am getting married this calendar year, but not until the summer time. I should have NEVER ever discussed any of my fabulous original ideas with her, who knew she's be stupid enough to steal them?! I had a fab idea I found on a blog for a cake topper, and wouldn't you know it my fiance told me his sister is doing it so we cant. really? really? get your own style and your own taste, why are you stealing mine? Given, it's just cake toppers but it enrages me! Not to mention she's already pinched my arm and told me I'm too skinny and need to gain weight, only to follow it up a few seconds later that she needs to loose 10 pounds before her wedding. I'm guessing these things stem from insecurities, but still annoying. Guessing I just ignore these things? Not worth calling them out? It makes my blood boil.

*****

maybe you should FAKE HER OUT.

like, you let it slip (from an outside source, obviously) that you're planning to do a baby sea turtle release, and then at the last minute when she's got the sea turtles all bought and paid for, you say "Omigod. That is so cruel."

  1. AHAHAHAHA. I would totally come for a baby sea turtle release.

I totally LOVE the idea of faking her out. Or filling her with anxiety about her choices, by saying casually, "I can't believe I was even THINKING about cake. Cake is so OVER. I'm totally doing Twizzler bouquets."

  4. My take: She will change her mind (and you will change yours) oh a hundred times or more between now and wedding day. Try try try to not let it bother you too much. She obviously thinks you're super-cool, and all of this would be kinda flattering even if wasn't so annoying. Don't deliver any low blows or "fake outs." Just keep your best ideas to yourself. Good luck! And I know a wonderful girl who does vintage cake toppers:

  5. Hilarious! Love it. I say definitely plant some fake ideas in her ear just for the sheer fun of it.
But most importantly stop sharing your ideas with her. Don't tell her another thing and if she asks make something up. Same goes for your man. And try to take comfort in knowing that imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery, she thinks you're awesome and wants to be you. As far as SILs go, it could be so much worse.

  9. funny !

but, dudette, everything is derivative. i mean, HELLO, you found the cake topper idea on SOMEONE ELSE'S BLOG.

just keep your lips zipped, or get over the fact that you may end up having the same cake topper, florist, big giant hair bow, etc.

  10. with you, OP. that would annoy the shit out of me. i love the idea of faking her out with a semi-kooky idea. let us know if she fell for it!

  12. i'm with 17beats. not one of us invented drinking signature cocktails out of mason jars and just cuz your bolero is white calfskin its still a mutherfukkin bolero.
weddings are the same thing over and over again all these stupid details we all obsess over mean nothing in the end.

  13. I think the best idea is to just keep your ideas pretty much away from her, or only ever talk about them in generals.

also, you seem to have a pretty together style sense, so chances are you notice other people's as well. Could you maybe not 'fake her out' as much, but instead drop some ideas that you actually think suit her that she just hasn't had the self-awareness/confidence to notice herself? that way, you stop her copying your idea, but you also get to ride about on a high horse as well?

  14. i think you should really take it as a compliment.
it means you have style and you are an inspiration for her.
i had the same thing recently.
and about some things i am less relaxed then others.

plus: of course you can still do everything you want.

  15. I AM GOING THROUGH THE EXACT SAME THING! Except the situation is the opposite and the FSIL is stealing my thunder by getting engaged after me, but married before me. I am hating every minute of it. Not going to go into details because she probably reads ESB. I just keep thinking that after her wedding is over, all the attention will be on my fiance and I. Totally feel your pain sister! Weddings from one family should not be within a year of each other! It flipping blows!

  16. ohmigod, i just had a dream last night that my little sister just got engaged (and i had to watch, everyone in the dream knew about it but her), and since ive only been engaged for a few months, i was PISSED. she is always wanting the attention and gets to do things way sooner than i got to when we were younger. like getting a car at 16 when i had to wait until i was 18... and as an older sister, im still a little bitter. but luckily, it was just a dream. i can now take a deep breath and tell myself not to let it bother me (in case it does happen for real!)

  17. moral of the story: she just wants the attention, dont let it bother you. your wedding will be just how you planned it!
