24 hours in San Francisco

1. Blue Bottle Coffee. Possibly the best latte I've ever had.

2. A fruitless search for a cool pair of sandals that a) won't give me blisters and b) won't go out of style in the next five minutes. I'm talking to YOU, gladiators. I did try these on (mostly to get them out of my system) but I started to develop welts just wearing them around the store. Turns out there are no cool, comfortable sandals. I think I'll take Lauren's suggestion and just buy a pair of Rainbows.

3. Humphry Slocombe. Blue Bottle Vietnamese coffee ice cream + prosciutto ice cream + frosted peanuts + Maldon salt (whatever that is) = the best sundae I've ever had.

4. Faith No More at The Warfield. FUCK. YES.

  1. That Sundae!! Glad you had a good time, besides the sandal thing. It's really strange but I think sometimes the comfier sandals are at really cheapo stores- I got some that I wore all summer for about $15 in Kmart (you might have the same or similar in US...). You have to make sure all the upper straps are softish material so that they don't rub like most of them...the Rainbows are cool though:)

  2. Sounds like a good trip.

(Maldon salt are flakes of sea salt and they are made in England.)

  3. wtf is with the blue bottle coffee i keep hearing about ? WANT.

sounds like you had quite a time. i spent about 60 hrs in SF this time last year -- one of the best trips of my life.

  4. woman, you've gotta give us more on the FNM show than that. ESB + SF + FNM is bloody galactic.(and what does your warfield poster look like?)

and i wouldn't normally pimp, you know, flip flops, but i mocked my sis about her rainbows for years and shut right up when i finally got a pair. the premier leather black single layer arch narrow strap have been worth every penny.

  7. Maldon sea salt is this amazing fancy flaky delicious salt! It makes everything tasty, and I want to eat the fuck out of that sundae.

    Sounds like an awesome day!

  8. My husband is from Florida and everyone he knows down there wears Rainbows. It's like a sin to buy any other type of flip-flop. They may not be high fashion, but they're no Crocs and they're definitely quality!

  9. Go with the rainbows! Sorry I'm a rainbow freak. Wear them every day, but I have to get a new pair about once a year because of that. I still have my first pair of baby ones that my mom got me when I was 3. Go with a darker leather if you can.. the lighter ones will just have the shape of your foot rubbed dark after a few weeks. If you have wide feel just get a mens small, thats what works for most chicks. Cause their womens shoes are soooo narrow. Reef leathers used to suck, but they've got some nice looking ones out this summer too- I'd check em out

  10. JEALOUS! I love San Francisco. We saw John Waters in a cable car the last time we were there - I know how much you love him! :)

  11. Are you back already? The Alembic on Haight has the most incredible cocktails, and REAL ones that aren't chock full of flavored vodkas. The Gilded Lily is the best drink of any kind I have ever tasted. And the food! Man! All I have to say is brioche toast with shaved brussels sprouts, panchetta, with a poached egg on top.

  12. you had me at blue bottle ice cream.

if you do find these elusive comfortable and stylish sandals please let me know, my search has been fruitless thus far.

  16. That sounds like an awesome trip. I wish there were independent coffee shops in Fort Worth. All I've been able to find are Starbucks. And that's a huge no-no.

For flip flops, I'm partial to Havaianas. Okay, so I'm a complete snob and wear ONLY Havaianas. I think they're WAY overpriced in the US, so I buy them pretty much in bulk whenever I go to Brasil.

  17. @Kristy my havaianas gave me a blister during said 24 hours in SF. so. I love em but they don't cut it for walkingwalkingwalking.

  18. Oh, sad day! I've only gotten blisters on super hot & sweaty days from mine. Ah well.

  19. @Kristy shouldn't the goal be NO BLISTERS? sigh.

  20. Well, yes. But I love them anyway, and they last me longer than any other flip flops I've ever tried (haven't owned Rainbows, though).

  21. This veg would like a bite of the sundae. They just opened a Blue Bottle in Williamsburg - divine iced coffees, divinely expensive, too.

  22. maybe you would like the vast array of comfortable-yet-stylish sandals that frye is cooking up these days (frye, frye, frye). i think zappos has the widest selection, plus you can't beat their return process.

  23. @kristina I think Frye better to stick to boots.

  24. are you sure they hurt your feet? REALLY REALLY REALLY SURE?

also why haven't i eaten that sundae? i have them ship me coffee every month and i've never had that sundae? why do i live in nc?

    ReplyDelete
  25. holy shit that sundae looks like magic. man i want to take a vacation!!!

so on the sandals front, just throwing this out there, but i was on a similar hunt, and being that i'm anti-flip-flop (unless i'm at the beach), that wasn't cutting it. but i found these, and at first was wary, but after trying them on, i've since worn them all weekend every weekend. so yeah.
