Tacky or timeless?

Hello ESB,

I am "pre-engaged" (or whatever the hell you call having a wedding venue and date that is still under-wraps to most) and trying to figure out my ring.

I have just wanted diamond bands for a long time and recently had decided to have the diamonds from this ring of my grandmother's reset.

I like the idea of having something sentimental, and am a huge fan of not spending our future on a piece of jewelry. Now I'm considering leaving it as is, but I'm struggling with whether it's awesome or a little tacky. It's from the 80's... Does it look like it?

I love the Kathryn Bentley organic oval ring you posted -- is this channeling that or just insulting it?

I would love an honest opinion.

Thanks,
Fucking over thinking things, as usual

First off, you are ENGAGED. You have a wedding venue and you've set a date and you're trying to figure out your ring? YOU ARE ENGAGED.

Re the ring: Yes, it looks like it's from the 80s. Which wouldn't matter if you looooooooved it, but you don't love it or else why would you be writing in with this question.

Get the stones reset.

    3. I thought I was the only one annoyed by this. Glad I am not a terrible person.

  2. I inherited my grandmother's ring which had a very traditional style setting, and had the stones re-set into a custom design. I felt a little guilt about changing it, but the ring turned out amazing and I love everything about it. It is the best of both worlds. I say go for it!

  3. Yeah I don't know that Ironic Tacky is the style you want for a wedding ring.

  4. Um, yeah, I sort of like the ring, but agree with ESB that if you have to ask, you should probably just reset those diamonds.
    Congrats!

  5. Well, you can always wait and have it reset in the future - but... that's what I intended to do and several years later it's still in the original setting because other expenses keep coming up.

    1. This is exactly what happened to me. I have an 80s-tastic engagement ring that I don't really like. It formerly belonged to my mother-in-law, who GOT DIVORCED (as if I needed another reason to reset it), and yet I still haven't had it done because it always seems a frivolous way to spend what cash we have. We're married now, so does the engagement ring even matter? I don't know. Sometimes I wear it, just for the sparklez. But mostly I just sigh and pin endless pictures of how I would get it reset (something like this is the current frontrunner).

All of which is to say, get it reset and do it now.

  6. Congrats on your engagement. Also, keep in mind that having a custom setting made can be just as expensive as buying a new ring and new diamonds. I inherited a bunch of diamonds a lot like the one in your grandma's ring, and the price we were quoted by our jeweler to have them reset was MORE expensive than buying the Bario-Neal ring I really wanted. Granted, the one I wanted had only tiny diamonds in it, but still. Get what you really want.

  7. Agreed. I kinda like the ring, but if you aren't sure, then you should definitely reset it.

  8. Reset. I used the stones and gold from my grandmother's rings and got a kick ass custom ring that I'm in love with.

  9. I might be in the minority here, but I think if you're at all unsure, you should wait to see if the original design grows on you with time. You can always get the stones reset later if you decide you want something different.

  10. If you're going to wear one piece of jewelry for the rest of your life you want to LOVE it.
