Are hipsters still on Facebook? Rly?

This otherwise rad illustration by Samantha Hahn (and the companion story from the September issue of Mankind Mag) spurs me to ask....

Because I thought Facebook was o-v-e-r. But I'm too old to be a hipster. What do I know?

  1. All I have to say is, screw Twitter. One social networking site is enough; and, past that, at least Facebook truly does allow people to stay in touch. It's a useful tool in an academic environment. Of course, this should be taken with a grain of salt, for I do not have any of those inane, pointless, time-wasting applications, nor do I spend time taking those silly quizzes or writing endless amounts of notes and status updates.

But, in terms of hipsters? Come on. I think Facebook is here to stay.

  2. Noooo, FB is still around. I like to say I've been on since it's beginning (popular among new college freshmen) so it isn't any worse than the other social networks out there. Esp. myspace.

  3. Facebook is shit. I don't understand why anyone uses it. I also don't know what a 'hispter' is, but from this drawing I'd guess that they are what Boy and I refer to as 'fucking art students'.

  4. I think my mom and dad have more Facebook friends than I do...

  5. my computer just deleted the comment i was about to post detailing my lack of understanding of facebook (i have an active account that baffles my pea brain).

probably i just don't understand computers given that mine hates me.

hipsters are okay. think about all the fun that wouldn't exist without them!? such as: http://www.latfh.com/ and: http://www.catbirdseat.org/catbirdseat/bingo.html without hipsters we'd have to make fun of people that probably don't deserve it. and that just ain't right.

  6. One of the good things about being in one's 50's is that there is now a good excuse for what has always been true. As in, I'm not a hipster. I wanted to be one when I was young and lived in Manhattan. Now I get the hipster thrill in a cheating way - I tell my son I am not cool and he says, "I think you are cool, Mom." But he still won't let me have a Facebook presence...

  7. Jacqueline, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but nothing is here to stay. Back when I lived in Williamsburg we used an ANSWERING MACHING to keep in touch.

  9. I've read your blog for a while now, but never commented, however, I felt this one was necessary. Have you ever seen the video of the hipster olympics? It's worth a look.

  11. facebook is perfect for those friends that aren't worth the extra effort it takes to actually keep in touch, but you'd like to know about every detail of their little lives so you can smugly feel better than them when they post fat bikini pictures.

except the majority of my facebook comments are from students who want to know when a paper is due. guess i'm too old to be a hipster too. sigh.

  12. myspace is over and facebook is being taken over by the baby boomers...

i suppose twitter is the last refuge of the hipster? until something new comes along that is.

  16. Facebook offically jumped the shark when all of our 50 year old relatives started "writing on our walls." I mean really, people. Send an email. 'Kids these days' might communicate this way, but your 30 year old relations are raising a eyebrow at you.

Not that I think Facebook was ever hip.

Twitter was hip. It's probably too widespread to still be hip, unless you still use it for saucy one-liners.

AH-HA! Conclusive proof. If Facebook is here to stay, it does not equal hipster.

That said, I have one word for you. Friendster. Oh, and Myspace.

  18. oh shit, i think i just realized how to get over the fact that i'm over facebook: i'm just going to interact there entirely in labyrinth quotes.

the exception that proves the rule: buffalo plaid.
