looking for a dress like THIS

Hey ESB,

I'm sure you're totally bored with dress questions but I'm wondering if you and your amazing readers could help me out on my search?

I am looking for a wedding dress that is simple, inexpensive, but with a natural waist and a full skirt. I'm not talking poufy, just enough volume to define my waist.

Our venue is very modern and all white, so I'm thinking my dress should also be pure white (or another color) as opposed to ivory, which I'm afraid would look yellow against the white in pictures.

This is my dream dress in every way, but it's $12,000 and I would rather spend $1,200, well, less, preferably:

I don't normally love lace but the Houghton is so modern and structured! Sigh. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions on similar dresses or any white dresses with my desired shape? Custom isn't an option for me locally, unfortunately.

Thanks!!

Out of ideas.

FEEL LIKE SHOPPING, YOU GUYS?

I'm alive, b/t/w. Just feeling even lazier than usual. Last week I was in a mad push to meet a grant deadline. And then I met it. And now I'm in the very important fucking-around-until-I-figure-out-what-my-next-project-is phase.

  1. I feel like I'll get some hate for this, but fitted-waist-full-skirt did make me think of Dolly Couture... they would probably make it longer for you/remove the bow/etc., if you wanted.

  2. As well as that other Rachel, I anticipate getting hated on for this (I know, BHLDN is stupid, etc) and this gown is blush. BUT blush (as opposed to ivory) looks awesome with a white backdrop. AND it's marked down to $900. Let's see if OP likes it.

    2. this does look like what the OP was asking for...

    3. Not really...they both are sleeveless to the same degree and a defined waist but that's about it. The blhdn dress is in the sort of sweet, romantic vein, and the OP's dream dress has a much harder modern edge

  3. This Dress is $1250 and (according to description) can be customized without sleeves.

    1. And custom color dip dyeing may be an option?

  4. I love a super-specific dress hunt as much as the next girl, but before you drive yourself crazy discounting every single ivory dress it might be worth dropping your photographer an email to check whether an ivory dress really would look dirty in a white room, looking at past weddings in the same venue, or even taking different fabrics down to the venue and snapping a few pictures (if they wouldn't think you were crazy). A lot of bridal shoots/runway shows seem to have white backgrounds, but the lighting, plus the photographer's white balance, seem to work to counteract the colour of the dresses. White is (so they say) a harsh colour to pull off for most colourings, so if you haven't already, it might be worth thinking about what would suit your skin tone, rather than what would match the walls. (Shots of you in your dress won't necessarily feature the wall, but they'll usually, you know, feature your skin.)

  5. How about white with black lace? It's a diff silhouette but it helps add a waist.

Or this Carla Zampatti?? It's $1,199.00.

  6. This Jenny Yoo is slightly over budget, but fits your criteria.

  7. This dress already sold but the etsy seller seemed pretty good at doing custom orders and the silhouette and structure is beautiful as well as the lace that she uses.

    1. Actually not sold yet. There's another listing and definitely within budget.

  8. Simple and inexpensive, with a natural waist and full skirt, but pretty boring.

  9. This fits all your requirements, but it is much more revealing than the Houghton. It comes in white as well as a number of bright colors, should you go that route (might be really cool to wear a dress that stands out in a white room).

  10. Sieht zwar gut aus, aber das wäre nicht mein Style. Ist und bleibt also immer alles Geschmackssache.

  11. etsy is your best friend for custom if you can't do it locally. find a wedding dress maker with similar styles and request a custom order.

  12. Your pick also reminds me of Lela Rose's designs. Maybe you can find one of her gowns at a sample sale. She does a lot of structural designs with beautiful lace.

  13. OP here! You guys are the best, thanks for all the options! I have tried on dresses and I am a (non-stop) dress wearer, so natural waist is a must for me! But I take the point about not needing stark white, going to talk to my photog about that.

  14. Not as nice as the Houghton, and there aren't many sizes left, but it's the right shape and color: jcrew fleur gown

  15. I immediately thought of this contemporary lace Hayley Paige dress that I'd tried on. It's tea length, but I believe that it came in full length by request, and you could hem the front. This dress was close to $3k I believe, but still much less than the example that you were eye-ing. I also tried on a cute JLM Blush dress that was shorter in front and was within your $1200 budget, but didn't have the interesting lace details.
