Seeking: Un Courthouse Wedding Ensemble

Hey Lady,

So, I have another question. I am doing a courthouse wedding here in LA before we have the big over the top, come to jesus wedding.
I would like to wear THIS

I am hoping your reader friends may have some ideas on how to piece this together- for less than $300? Maybe? Hopefully?

Thanks lady.

HEYREADERFRIENDS: Feel like shopping?

It's not that I'm too busy or anything. Lady asked for *your* ideas.

  1. This skirt from Asos looks similar, but it's in creme rather than white...there's also this skirt on Etsy? I wish I had ideas for the top...

    1. For what it's worth, the "cream" colored things that I've ordred from Asos have been very... creamy. Much more ivory/yellow toned in real life than on the site, and I had to send back two potential wedding things. If you are trying to piece together a top and a bottom it could be hard to make the whites match when shopping online. That is the issue I ran into at least - hopefully your experience will be less of a pain in the ass than mine ;)

  2. Not exactly the same, but white crop top.

  3. I refuse to shop for someone who is essentially having two weddings. So there!

    1. We are having an older family friend officiate our wedding and didn't want him to have to hassle with getting ordained so we're filling out all the paperwork a week before...and I'd like to look nice.

    2. I refuse to shop for a courthouse wedding, period. Making a simple courthouse ceremony into a twee photo opp is on par with calling your under-100 bash an "elopement."

    3. You guys are hateful, good god. Wanting to look nice doesn't mean "twee" and doesn't mean "photo op".

    4. Seriously! WTF Rachel? You know nothing about this person or her plans. Why would you NOT want to dress nice and take photos at the courthouse? It's a big moment, not to mention romantic and fun! Geez.

    5. dude, Rachel, you serious? people like you cause me to lose faith in humans.

    7. Ya, read the header. That'll show 'em.

    8. Is this, "Seeking: Un Courthouse Wedding Ensemble" the header of which these inside know- it-all’s speak? Because nothing about this headline tells me we should have known ESB wanted everyone to heckle this poor chick. Also, how sad and lonely is your life that you need to shit all over the poor assholes who don't know they aren't cool enough but write and ask for advice anyways?
I'm all about letting someone know when they are being ridiculous, and I don't believe in tip toeing around the world, trying not to hurt folks feelings. This blog can sometimes be a fun place. But a lot of times, like here, it's a bunch of grown ass women, acting like high school mean girls.
Feel free to say something nasty about me now based on this comment. It will only make me pity you guys more. Unlike youse, I don't need to build myself up, by tearing other people down.

    9. Every time someone wants to be an a-hole on this blog. . .the header comes up as the ultimate defense. You're not the reader who "gets it" you're just an asshole.

    10. Oh THAT header. Why isn't the blog always ladies being nasty then? If that's the scheme here, why not populate the entire blog with innocently written letters asking for the most part, innocent (but sometimes silly) questions and then all the nasty gals here can start tearing them apart?

It's annoying to enjoy it 75% of the time, and then get blind sided by honestly the nastiest comments of any blog I read. I feel bad for the poor saps who wrote in and I feel even worse for the poor souls who feel it necessary to attack the letter writers. It reminds me of how nasty I used to be until I realized I was clinically depressed. Try therapy or Prozac you guys. Or weed or gin, just lighten the fuck up and try making someone smile instead of cry once in a while. That's a real challenge for you.

    11. Wow. I just saw all this. I guess I should feel offended or sad, or be sitting in a dark corner somewhere binge eating coco puffs because people decided to make themselves feel better about their life choices by belittling mine. Sorry. No. I was too busy enjoying my life. Thanks to all those who actually shared valuable advice and opinions. Hugs.

  4. The success of this look is the structured nature and stiffer material of the top.

Whatever you do, please do not wear a fitted cotton crop t-shirt. This is not 1994.

  5. I'm not a huge fan of the crop top. I am a fan of this Emerson Fry.

  6. This crop top isn't stiff per se, but it's not fitted like some of the other suggestions.

I really like the cut outs on this one.

  7. Zara

    Could be hemmed shorter.

  8. Similar skirt (although weirdly half see-through and that is one ugly waistband).

I had a couple of the Zara tops open in tabs that others have already shared. Here are a few more. None are cropped but area all kind of boxy-like:
    ZARA 1
    ZARA 2
    ZARA 3
    ZARA 4

Club Monaco top - not cropped either but much more structured
Cropped top that came up every time I did a search for this type of shirt
3.1 Phillip Lim - awesome but way $$$
Rachel Zoe leather top - they say this comes in white but there are no photos (leather might be hella hot in a courthouse, though)

  9. Jenn's skirt suggestion (either) + ZARA 1 from Hillary would be great - mixed textures/patterns, all white - and you can use some of your leftover budget to have a tailor adjust the shirt to get the proper cropped fit. I like the current style of showing a sliver of your midsection with fitted garments.

  10. This top and this skirt. Scroll down on the page to see it together.

Or maybe this cropped sweater with this flared skirt or this floral skirt?

I really like some of the other Zara shirts, but now I want to go to S Korea.

  11. Some top options?

    Neoprene
    Cutouts?
Faux python (I know I know...but when I think "crop top" Nasty Gal is the first thing that comes to mind...)

And for what it's worth, I totally think you should go with Melanie's suggestion of a structured skirt and flowier top.

  12. I think getting the proportions just right is key. I'm super tall so most cropped tops look stupid on me, so I got some regular shirts adjusted at a tailor to work with high waisted skirts. I recommend this.

  13. Can we discuss crop tops for a second? Not saying the bride-to-be here shouldn't wear one, but they strike me as a short-lived trend for college girls shopping at Urban Outfitters. If you have worn them and discovered they're flattering and awesome, please enlighten me.

As an aside, I've been known to occasionally pop my head into an UO store. There is occasionally a cool thing mixed in with all the crazy things. But last time I was in there I could not actually find a t-shirt that was NOT cropped. It was a little frightening. I took it as a sign I'm too old to be buying their clothes anymore, even though there was a cool pair of overalls hanging on a mannequin in the corner (with a crop top underneath, goddammit.)

    1. Oh and because I can't bring up UO without thinking about the fuckery that goes on on a corporate level with that store, I think it's worth pointing out that the woman who started UO in the 70's (then called The Free People's Store) is really cool. Interestingly, it all went south when she sold the biz to her ex-boyfriend...
