What do I wear to the courthouse in January?

Dear ESB,

I'm getting hitched in January at the courthouse down the street from our house. No family, no flowers, no hassle. He will wear his standard nice outfit of clean Wranglers, snap front shirt and black cowboy hat. I'd like to wear something special that will look good in photographs but I rarely dress up and have no idea where to start or where to shop.

My everyday style is western work wear and I'm a member of the big boobs club. I like black, plaid and big turquoise jewelry. I don't like sparkles, tulle or wearing stilettos. I would be happy in pants or a dress. Keep in mind that Washington state is cold, rainy and possibly snowy in mid January and I'm willing to drop around a grand for my wedding day outfit.

Maybe you and the gang could help me out?

Thank you so much.

Boy did you just lob me a softball.

ISABEL MARANT

  1. This old Anthropologie dress was the first thing I thought of but my short 3 min search didn't find it available anywhere.

If this was me, I'd probably look for a short white dress I liked and then add all of my own accessories (boots, belt, etc).

    - Not totally white, but: Boy by Band of Outsiders
    - Tibi
    - JCrew (yeah, yeah)
    - Marlene Birger

    2. One more: just saw this Lauren Moffatt dress on a fake bride (ugh, mustaches). Very cute and kind of western (although not very warm looking).

    3. "ugh, moustaches" is such a beautifully succint expression of disdain. Love.

    7. +1 for that J. Crew. It would be almost unbearably cute next to a cowboy groom.

  3. Esb's dress would look cool on a small boob lady. With big boobs it'll make her look fat.

    1. Yeah, sadly I have to agree here. I'm a smallish lady with biggish boobs, and anything without at least a little definition at the waist starts to look like a nightgown.

    2. time for a big crazy turquoise-studded belt, methinks. can we have wedding belts, like boxing-championship belts? that is what i want.

  4. YES. Belt it with a braided leather belt if you want definition around the waist, but I think the short, boxy "mod" style like this can be very pretty and shows off your legs.

    1. YES to the belt. esp considering she's got big boobs. else this will look like a muumuu.

  6. YES, she must do Isabel Marant! I love this collection. LOVE. And it will be a dress she will probably wear over and over, given her style.

  7. I like the idea of plaid. Something like this with a great black blazer.

You mentioned pants. Maybe this pair with this shirt or, if that one's too Hey Dude, maybe this one or this one.

And I'm just gonna leave this denim gown right here.

    1. I love that someone made a Hey Dude reference. My favorite show growing up.

  8. Don't forget that you'll need something nice to wear over your outfit going to/coming from the courthouse, especially if you plan on photos outside. Maybe this jacket?

  9. The Isabel Marant is a home run with the Shoshanna plaid shift a close second. I could see both being my stand-by party dress for years. Love the horse print top! Turns out I'm not digging any of the white dresses. I guess I'm not a very traditional bride. Thank you so much ESB and crew. You have given me kick in the right direction for some successful fancy frock finding!
