amazeballs wedding tie!
M. Dash got married (again) and she sent me these photos of *CORRECTION*: his tie from General Knot & Co. in action.
My bad. Sometimes I forget that Pierrepont Hicks is not the only tie company in the world.
p.s. The pics from M's first lil Korean courthouse wedding are over here.

Pierrepont Hicks FW 2012 + A Giveaway!
**closed**
In honor of H and my fourth anniversary (FOURTH ANNIVERSARY!) @mrsphicks offered me this amazeballs Spider tie to give away to one lucky reader.
Okay, so maybe the giveaway actually has nothing to do with our anniversary. Maybe Katherine just wanted to show off the new collection.
Anyhoo.
Leave a comment below (why you like ties, or why you like men in ties, or why you like women in ties, or just "Pick me!") by 12pm PST on Aug 20 and I'll select a winner at random.

The Best Cotton Tie
Of course our pals (and ESB sponsor) Pierrepont Hicks made GQ's list of The Best Cotton Ties for Summer Suiting. In my opinion, no one else on the list even comes close.

If I were to get married now...................
from Chandra of Greer Chicago
Our wedding was a stripped-down affair with a finely-honed list of attendees that included myself, my husband Steve, Judge Hogan and a nice lady whose name I didn’t catch.
Steve and I had been long-time cohabiters when I decided to put a ring on it and proposed to him in mid-December. We set a date of January 12 because that was the fastest we could get all of the legalities taken care of. When we make a decision we like to get on with it.
Our wedding (appointment?) was scheduled for mid-afternoon so we both worked in the morning and met up in the lobby of my office, the Amoco building. At the appointed time I glided down the escalator in a humble grey sweater and grey wool skirt to meet my nervous betrothed in his shirt, tie and only pair of good slacks. He later told me he was scared I wouldn’t show up although that was unlikely since we were living together and I’d have to show up eventually. Maybe he thought I’d throw him over for a rousing discussion of oil shipments from Venezuela. Mmm hmm.
Anyway, we walked over to the Daley Center where Judge Hogan fixed us up. We’ll never forget him saying we seemed to be very much in love. Nor the other young bride and groom who were waiting outside his office and seemed to be very much in a hurry to get married if you catch my drift. I think Judge Hogan’s retired now, but for years, whenever he ran for reelection we affectionately voted for him.
After the ceremony we celebrated at a long-gone restaurant, Randall’s for Ribs. We should have played it like that scene in “Tom Jones," but we kept it civil. We honeymooned in Paris but unfortunately it was about 4 months later.
When East Side Bride asked me to write about what I would do differently if I knew then what I know now I asked myself “Would you have a ‘real’ wedding?” “Would you still hang with Judge Hogan but throw a big party afterwards?” Honestly, the answer is “No” and “No.” I like how we got married. It’s a memory that only we will share and we think there’s something powerfully romantic about that. Neither of us likes being the center of that much attention, anyway.
HOWEVER.
If I had it to do over I would ramp up the fabulous factor, oh, about 10000%.
1) First of all, I’d wait until the weather was warmer, perhaps late-May, so I wouldn’t have to celebrate my wedding anniversary in the dead of winter for the next fifty years.
2) I’d still go to work the morning of only because I love a good day into night challenge and this would be the ultimate -- from “Work to Wedding!” in just a few wildly-expensive steps!
3) I’d start with this dress by Michael Kors.
4) And just to keep the guys – and they were ALL guys – in check I’d demurely cover up with this jacket by Willow.
5) I like being on-time for meetings both professional and social so I think I’d need this Gucci watch.
6) Before the ceremony, I’d exchange these for this pair of Rene Caovilla t-straps.
7) I’d sprinkle these Marni crystals on the lapel of my jacket or maybe along the neckline of my dress.
8) And because I need a feminine pop of color I’d exchange my work bag for this Christian Louboutin clutch. I don’t know what I’ve actually done with my work bag but I can’t worry about that right now.
9) A simple black Alexander McQueen suit for my man, paired with a Lee Allison tie and a well-made Church’s brogue. And, yes, he’d wear these things, he likes to look sharp.
10) He’d be carrying a bouquet of pale blue roses from Suzanne Cummings for me (although the little Carnation-laden bouquet he actually gave me was very sweet).
11) We’d upgrade from ribs to a mind-blowing dinner at Alinea.
12) Followed by a night in a mind-blowing suite at Trump Tower and Hotels where we’d have a cake from Bittersweet Pastry waiting for us (we’ll need something that’s been frozen for a year to force down on our first anniversary.)
13) Finally, instead of sending out wedding announcements (which perhaps raise the expectations of gifts which we wouldn’t want) we’d write notes on lovely, heart-shaped Twinrockers paper to our family and closest friends telling them how much they mean to us and how we looked forward to continuing to share our lives with them as wife and husband. Despite the fact they weren’t invited to our wedding.
So that would be our nuptial extravaganza. Over the top, oh yeah, but this is all hypothetical anyway so what the hell. But 24 years later I can honestly say how we were actually married was just fine. More than fine. We’re still together, still in love and that’s what counts. Oh, and we’re going to Paris for our 25th wedding anniversary. In the dead of winter.
(Catch up with the rest of the series here.)

Where can a cool kid from Minnesota find a suit?
Dear ESB,
We're 7 weeks away from the wedding, and my dearest darling fiance doesn't have his outfit picked out yet. He hasn't figured out what the groomsmen will be wearing either, and they're starting to bug him about it (we are fortunate enough to have five very-on-top-of-it-groomsmen who actually want to be prepared, and not naked, at our wedding!)
Ideally, he wants to wear a three piece Donegal wool/tweed suit, or a coat-vest-pants combo that are (classily) mismatched (this Billy Reid suit, on the left, is a perfect example). And we'd like the groomsmen to wear a pants-vest combo but no jacket. Taupe or gray preferred. But... We live in a small Minnesota town (Duluth) and don't have the luxury of shopping at awesome vintage shops or boutiques. We have been scouring Google, to no avail.
Do you have anything up your sleeve?
Love,
Naked in Duluth
*****
NID,
I emailed my lady Kat from Pierrepont Hicks and she asked her style guru Samuel Fehrenbach, the proprietor of Martin Patrick3, a men's accessories shop in Minneapolis.
Here's what Sam had to say:
Well, I can’t speak for Duluth, but Heimie’s Haberdashery in St. Paul is for sure the best bet in the Twin Cities - and they do all their tailoring in house, which is convenient for wedding things, I’m sure. Otherwise Twill out in Edina Galleria may be a good bet as well. They’ve got kind of a tweedy Hickey Freeman vibe (but they also sell Vineyard Vines ties – which is totally the opposite). I think both shops do custom, though seven weeks is pressing your luck in that regard. You might have some luck at Judd Frost in Wayzata, but I’ve never actually been there, so I can’t give you a full endorsement. Wish I could give you a little more to go on, but unfortunately in Minnesota suits for cool kids can be tough to find.
Side note, I don’t think I’d call Duluth a small town, but that must just mean that I’m really really from the Midwest.
When I was linking over to Hickey Freeman just now (thank you Sam!) I noticed that this tan plaid suit is 50% off. It's lighter weight than what you're looking for, but how cold will it be in Duluth at the end of September?
I'm asking. I have no idea what the weather is like in Duluth.
xoxo,

Guest Post: Kat of Pierrepont Hicks
To get to the Isle of Mull, our friends and family had to fly into Scotland, via Edinburgh or Glasgow, rent a car, drive to the West Coast town of Oban, where they would catch a ferry to Craignure, the tiny ferry landing town on Mull, one of the Hebrides inner isles. The drive from Craignure is 45 minutes North to Tobermory, on single lane roads that have little shoulders known as "passing points" where you basically pull off to let someone pass you (or let someone not hit you head on, as in the case of our guests who drove about 20 mph pissing off the locals who whiz along these roads at 80 mph). I should mention they have an annual car rally on Mull where people race and pull all kinds of Luke Duke moves in their banged up mini coopers.
By having a destination wedding, the goal was to have only those who really and truly wanted to be there - there. And so it was. 49 of our friends and family showed up. They showed up kind of pissed off. There were guffaws at our reception dinner when Mac gracefully thanked everyone for coming. "I think everyone has experienced that feeling on vacation, when you end up somewhere amazing, like Mull, and you wish you could magically transport your friends and family to share it with-" "Magically!??" my uncle chortled from across the room.
Throughout the hundreds of hiccups (maid of honor's hair dryer blew out half of the town’s lights Friday night, my mother announced morning of the wedding that the English boxwood I thought was so quaint along our dining tables "smells like cat pee," and the usual drunken endeavors of goofy friends in kilts), Mac glided through making frizzy guests laugh and angry innkeepers smile. We woke up pretty much the entire sleepy town of Tobermory, inadvertently, with our American-ness. I remember one lovely little old man walking along the dock next to me, the morning of our wedding, as I breathed in the crisp salty sea air, hot tea in hand: "I can tell you're American because you people bring your massive cups of coffee everywhere." We tried to fit in, but if you've ever seen the film "Local Hero" – it was kind of like that.
As the weekend progressed, my mother's luggage lost still on the morning of, I started having a physical reaction to the stresses through blotchy hives caused I believe by the close range of my family members (extended and in-laws) on an island with nowhere to run. But Mac remained calm the entire time.
Coming up: Kat and Mac (the wife and husband behind my all-time favorite ties) have each put together lists of their destination staples.
"Nothing too fancy," says Kat.

Mister Mort's F U Club Tie
I've been obsessed with this tie since I first caught a glimpse on all plaidout. It would make a subtler choice for a groom than an ironic tuxedo t-shirt, no? Not to mention a hella rad gift for groomsmen.
Email Mister Mort directly to inquire about orders (and peruse his blog for sartorialism with a sense of humor). Mr. Mort also does velvet bow ties in black, blue, purple and orange, but my heart is with the FUCKYOU. For obvious reasons.

My new favorite from Cyberoptix Tie Lab (of course).Interlocking vintage syringes are reversed and doubled in a kaleidoscopic pattern. Fresh from the prep school underworld.
