butch bridesmaid vs. meaniepants bride

Apr 1

Hi ESB,

I have been engaged for what seems like an eternity (not the issue) and one friend who was always going to be a BM.

She is wearing this. I bought it at least 2 years ago (3? Who knows), and thankfully I still like it, as does my BM.

My daughter (flower girl) will be wearing this. For the record, I bought it a year ago, realized it wasn’t going to fit and miraculously found the next size up at 50% off. Woo!

When we decided to set the date for later this year, I realized one of my great friends had become a best friend and in terms of BM’s she would totally rock it. Completely reliable and extremely creative - just what a girl needs. So naturally I asked her if she would be part of my wedding. She said yes. Yay!

I have asked her what she would like to wear, and she has told me it’s up to me. This totally bites.

She has worn a dress twice in her life. She is 5’6”, about a sz 12 apple figure, and gay. I had thought she would look great in some slacks, shirt, suspenders (?), but she said she didn’t want to look like a screaming lesbian, although I imagine she would look great. She said she thinks bridesmaids should wear dresses. I am totally cool with it, but I am completely stuck for idea. Let’s be honest. On a day to day basis, she’s a tad butch. Winter’s uniform is jeans, a hoodie and Nike Airs, and in summer it’s board shorts, a t-shirt and Havaianas.

Her requirement is that it has sleeves of some sort (there’s a tattoo on her shoulder she absolutely hates and is in the process of removing), my requirement is it goes with the dresses of my other favorite ladies.

Help!

what did you find??

Didn’t.

Thought we’d do away with BM’s altogether. (I think I got a tad lazy and put it into the Too Hard basket)

Soo.

I said I had found this dress for her.

I was happy with it. She said she liked it. Then she didn’t. No bra. Huge issue. Apparently strapless bras don’t cut it for her puppies.

Then, she suggested I should replace her with my sister (who incidentally is now also a bridesmaid, so it’s turning out to be one big bridesmaid party). And I said why would I do that, however if she wasn’t feeling it, that’s cool with me. Then we got over the issue and I suggested this dress, which she liked most out of the 3 I suggested at that time, but wouldn’t give me her measurements, I had to measure her the next day when a tape measure would be brought in. Then the dress sold out over night (It was on sale, 70% off) before I could get her measurements.

Then I suggested a bucket load of dresses, some thrown in there ‘cause she said I was choosing dresses her nana would like, then she called me meaner than her nana (we share a name and birthday) I said this would be mean. Haha.

All joking aside, what the fuck does she wear? My florist is a friend of hers and she agrees my BM looks uncomfortable in a dress. I’m leaning back towards pants and a top, so she will just need to get over the screaming lesbian look, which she wears so well on a day to day basis?

I don’t mean to sound snarky, or perhaps I do just a little, but we are now 2 months out from “my day” (fuck I hate that saying) and I want finality with her outfit. My preferred way of shopping is on the internet and if it doesn’t work, send it back. But now I am running short of time, and I am not sure how much of an option that is.

Do your readers have any suggestions?

For the records,
[This is the dress I have for my sister]

The required colour is grey.

And fuck the "required color." At this point, the lady just needs to be clothed.

how do i ask the parents to put the baby in a baby cage thingy so it won't ruin my wedding?

i need some help, and also perhaps need to grow a set.

our wedding is in Sept this year. it's a casual family thing so understandably the only baby/person under the age of 25 (my hubby-to-be's niece) in the whole of both mine and my finance's family is coming. however i had just assumed that since we were hiring a whole house for the wedding they would just bring a playpen thingy and put the baby (as she is a baby, she will be 12mths at the wedding) inside the house for 15 minutes while we tie the knot. i don't have a baby so i know all the mothers that read this will be up in arms, furious that i would suggest such a thing, but maybe they could imagine it was their wedding. After the ceremony i'm happy for them to parade her and everyone can coo about how cute she is and all that shit.

Since we started planning the wedding the mum has made multiple comments regarding the baby being a flower girl. two issues - I'm not having bridesmaids so noone to help her down the aisle etc, and.... SHE'S 12 MONTHS OLD (can they even walk??). So i'm working up the courage to say no, its going to be a shit fight as is because she's my finances' parents think she is the best thing ever and are slightly deranged when it comes to her (understandably proud grandparents etc), how do i ask the parents to put the baby in a baby cage for 15 minutes so she doesn't cry through our ceremony without sounding like a complete raging twat.

or.... am i being a twat????

*****

you're being twat-ish.

you can't ask them to leave the baby in a cage. SHE IS NOT A CHIHUAHUA. but you can (and should) ask one of the parents to stand in the back holding the baby, prepared to whisk her away if she starts making a nuisance of herself.

NO FREAKING WAY ON FREAKING EARTH does a 12-month-old get to be a flower girl.

Seeking: A Not-Too-Girly Flower Girl's Dress

Hello

I am in need of some help! My wedding is in a month and i still have not found a flower girl dress. She's not really a flower girl, she's holding a sign that says "Here comes the bride." The problem is she is more of a tomboy and doesn't really like the dress I like. I'd rather put her in something we both like.

This is what i'm thinking of but she says it's too girly. Any suggestions?

*****

I have a radical idea. Why don't you let her wear PANTS?

Caramel Baby & Child has some cute trousers (see above).

And it turns out J. Crew is not a bad place to shop for girls' pants, which are not easy to find. There's a lot of legging-type bullshit out there, and there are jeans and there's some sweat-pant-y stuff, but there are not a lot of straight-up good pants. Even an 8-year-old needs good pants.

For the uber-tomboy, J. Crew even has a "borrowed from my brother" section. Which means they're listing the boys' clothes in the girls' section so you feel okay about buying them for your daughter/niece/flower girl. Hey, whatever it takes.

on adding pizazz to the wedding ceremony

Dear ESB,

I have no wedding crises needing resolution, but I would like your input on a ceremony tradition. My husband and I do not have any little kids in our families. I'm fine with having the minister or members of the wedding party pass us our rings, but some dippy, sentimental piece of me wants a flower girl to dress up and throw petals. We own cats, but that wouldn't fly. My grandma has arthritis. My mom has miniature schnauzers that would steal the show, but my husband isn't a big fan. Any ideas or creative methods of ring presentation? Or interesting bridal processional? I don't need my wedding video YouTubed and acknowledged by Anderson Cooper, but some pizazz would be fun.

-Liz

*****

I don't have any sentimental feelings about flower girls. Maybe because I had to be a flower girl when my dad married my stepmom and I didn't think it was fun. I didn't particularly like the dress the bride had custom-made for me and I thought it was torture to stand up there while the grownups droned on and on. As for bringing pets down the aisle, god help us. I mean, if you are really really attached to your dog (and esp if she happens to be fabulously photogenic) then fine. But for the love of god don't borrow dogs.

The point of a wedding ceremony is not to have "pizazz." The point is to SAY YOUR VOWS TO EACH OTHER. It will be lovely and amazing and moving and overwhelming. You don't need pizazz.

p.s. You have seen hipster puppies, yes? Thx to Blah, Blah, Blahg for spotting this killer shot.

guest post: Chelsea on flower girls

I am so happy to be on East Side Bride today sharing my favorite picks for flower girl dresses! I adore flower girls and prefer dozens of them at a wedding any day over too many bridesmaids. I think the prettiest flower girl dresses are not from a bridesmaid or wedding dress company but from children's designers, vintage shops or made by hand.

Ses petites mains

These effortless silk dresses from Ses Petites Mains are simple, lovely and can be worn over and over again.

Eliza gran

Eliza Gran is one of my favorite clothing designers so I am thrilled that she’s begun to design dresses for flower girls. Above are a few dresses from seasons past but you can email her to get more info.

Flora and henri

Flora & Henri is a gorgeous children's clothing company out of Seattle and these two beautiful dresses happen to be on sale right now.

I spotted this vintage dress on Etsy and I think it would be super sweet for a flower girl!

Vintage patterns

I love these vintage patterns (also found on Etsy) and think they'd be adorable sewn up on a Liberty cotton, or a linen, or silk.

non-j.crew alternatives for flower girls?

Nikki emailed me to ask for help with flower girl style. Here's her dilemma:

We are not having a traditional bridal party but decided that it would be fun to have my only niece participate as our flower girl. My wedding dress is a short number from Elizabeth Dye and so I want something equally sassy, sweet and fun for the flower girl (but not clone-like or anything). David's bridal makes me want to puke and I have tried a little etsy searching which only resulted in lots of tutus. I am hoping you have a non-j.crew alternative for me as I really do not even know where to begin.

As I've said before, I'm no expert on kids, so I brought in the big guns in on this one. A guest post from Chelsea of {frolic!} is up next. Chelsea always has a super sweet, easygoing vision of clothes for little girls (maybe because her three-year-old niece is so cool?)

Treasures, Wings (gift ideas for ring bearers and flower girls)

Heidi asked me:

Hey, Just curious if you have any ideas for gifts for the kids in a wedding. We have 2 ring bearers and 2 flower girls that are nieces and nephews and we want to get them something small that doesn't suck.. We talked about finding cool wooden toys that they could keep... but we're just a couple of weeks from the wedding and I don't know when or where we could find them. Any thoughts on a cool alternative?

Since I certainly can't claim to be an expert on kids (I don't hate them, I just don't hang out with them very often) I decided to call in the Kid Whisperer herself: Amanda of First Milk. Below are her lovely suggestions.

In my mind, the best gifts for littles are simple, charming. So. A smattering of small things that do not suck for loving-up flower girls, ring bearers and other tiny guests.

1. Costumes. I buy a lot of these for small friends, and find they lend themselves to whimsy without creating chaos. I've had great success with capes for running fastly in (I like these from Little Adventures) and wings (feathered or fairy) for spinning about as the evening grows dark. And any costume shop should have a good selection of the sorts of hats, crowns, noses and masks that make littles grin.

2. Soothing pretties. For favors homemade and sweet, I direct you to Peonies and Polaroids' gifts for her own tiny wedding guests: A squidgy bunny for the tiniest little, and a sweet, homemade bag with wax crayons and coloring pages for another. If you're not a DIYer, you might find a
jellycat friend, like this junglie spotty giraffe, or a pleasant puppet. Such lovely presents would make me behave splendidly.

3. Treasures in a tin box. Littles love small treasures, and I would wager that a quick trip to your local toy store would turn up all sorts of classic, party-appropriate friends: finger puppets, mustaches, pinwheels and pig noses, bubbles and brave knights. For what is better than a box of treasures for no one but you?
